(1) The zoom controls are shown when the mouse is hovering over the design area.
So that seem OK.
It is mysterious that the TextView sunset_time_textView is not visible in:
- preview
- component tree
I did not see an exception in idea.log that could explain that problem.

That is incorrect - the zoom tools appear whenever the cursor is placed
anywhere in the design window - it did not appear when moving the cursor
even over the layout
It still leaves the other two errors. In the past switching between the
code / layout views would fix the issue. Worst case closing the xml file
and reopening would show the missing component but this time that did not
work
Please do not suggest Invalidate Caches and Reset which is the standard
answer for all the other issues I encounter with the current version of
Android Studio
