Still having this bug too, since Android 3.0 canary 1, even on a freshly bootstrapped project on a fresh installation of android studio.
Just accept support down to KitKat in the wizard settings, and even the screens generated by Android Studio won't show preview, apparently because of a conflict in support libraries.

support lib 26.0.0 is not released yet, please use appcompat beta1 libraries to fix this problem temporarily.

I am using com.android.support:appcompat-v7:26.0.0-beta2 , still the problem persists.
