Huge issue for my partner who has a Nexus 6P; although - at least in our case - it predates Android O DP1 by at least a month. Nonetheless the issue remains after upgrading to the dev preview and each subsequent release thereafter.
This happens reliably but the percentage at which it turns off fluctuates i.e the phone will always turn off before the battery indicator suggets it should, but the percentage at which the device shuts off is variable though within the bounds of 10-20%.

Per your request, I have attached a screenshot of the issue that just happened about an hour ago. Battery instantly drained and died at 50%. Battery is also draining rapidly from 100% until the problem happens.
Bug report also attached. Please advise if this qualifies for a replacement phone. This is virtually unusable for me unless I'm next to an outlet and keep recharging every 1-2 hours.

I have a Nexus 6P that for about a month has started to go off with the battery at 60% and I started to turn on with the battery charger and an extra external battery for about a week now does not turn on even with the battery charger inserted. I contacted Google support that after endless trials downloaded me back to the dealer for assistance. It is unacceptable that a 600 euro mobile becomes unusable after a year.

This is obviously a hardware issue. Nexus was supposed to be a device which has the best hardware available to it during it's lifetime and this is obviously not the case. How is Google and Nexus going to fix this?

Why are you assuming this is a hardware issue? My phone worked fine until
some of the recent Nougat updates. Since I purchased my phone at Best Buy
and its past the warranty period, I have zero recourse except to join the
class action lawsuit against Google and Huawei for the battery and
bootloader issue on this phone. I gave Huawei a chance to fix the problem
but customer support won't even respond to my emails. Time to join the
lawsuit and find another phone.

I'm in the same boat here. Problems started in Nougat and continue in Oreo. Faster drain than normal, then just below 50%, it drops to zero and shots off. Have Bluetooth off now and screen brightness so low I can't see details in darker images. I have to carry a battery everywhere. This is just plain ridiculous.
ap...@gmail.com <ap...@gmail.com> #13
I noticed this issue with my Nexus 6P mainly once I upgraded to Nougat. Now it goes into battery saving mode at 15% and immediately shuts off, sometimes earlier. I used to get 6 hours screen on time until I upgraded to Nougat, now I barely get 3 before the thing dies. Bluetooth always off, screen brightness as low as I can tolerate, and I've always used my phone like this since the start.
If it's a battery issue, a year battery life is quite pathetic, I've owned other phones that have had batteries last longer and never experienced shut off problems like with my Nexus.

If you purchased your phone directly from Google, they have been sending
out refurbished replacements even outside the warranty period. If you
purchased it from a retailer like Best Buy, you have to go to Huawei but
they will not help you if you are outside the warranty period. Huawei
Customer Support won't even respond to me. Hopefully everyone dealing with
this issue is aware of the Class Action lawsuit that was filed against
Google and Huawei in April. It's still a pending case in California in US
District Court in San Jose. It's the only hope to get them to fix the issue
for those outside of Warranty coverage.

Since Google and Huawei refuse to do anything, I took my phone back to Best
Buy where I purchased it from. I brought the Class Action Lawsuit
paperwork, showed them the screen shot of the battery draining at 50%, and
pleaded my case. My 1 year of protection coincided with the manufactures
warranty, not an extended warranty as I thought. That's a diffent issue,
but just make sure you read the fine print on any warranty and don't
believe what the Salesperson is telling you. The decision came down to the
Cell Phone Department Manager. Even though I was 3 months out of warrant,
she agreed to do an exchange and allowed me to apply my purchase price of
the 6P to a new Samsung S8. I was very lucky that Best Buy was willing to
work with me. Others have not been so fortunate. There are over 4000 6P
owners that have registered with the Law Firm that filed the Class Action
Lawsuit with Google and Huawei. This is not a small issue. Fortunately for
me I was able to get rid of it and move on to something else. I would never
buy a Google phone again based this experience.

Same problem for me. Been happening since Nougat. Gets to about 15% (sometimes higher) and then when i pick it up and unlock it, immediately goes into battery saver (orange bar top and bottom) and shuts off immediately. Super frustrating. You would imagine that with a class action pending, that this would be a priority issue that would be dealt with accordingly.

I'm having the same issue with my Nexus 6p. Early August on 7.1.2 I was running great.
Then I installed the beta and I immediately started getting massive battery drain followed by unexpected battery discharge from 50/60% to 0% without warning (never even hit power saving mode at 15%)
Just got the OTA notification today and thought the September release surely cleared this up but it has not. It is worse.
See my attachments. 94% battery with less then 2 hours of charge remaining. The other is 86% with 1h15 remaining.

This is bull that this is a P3/S3. As a software tester, if I had a user group that was affected by a defect such as this, it would be at least a P1/S3 or even a P2/S2.
It is more than annoying - it's making the phone near unusable for a number of the user population, and is certainly having reputational damage. I'm not sure I'll buy a Pixel 2 after how poorly this has been handled. Loved my Nexus 4, loved my 6p up until this started happening. Currently, won't buy another one.
It has to be a software issue, but more resources need to be allocated to resolving this issue.
On at least one occasion in the past 6 months of having this defect outstanding, I have had the phone drain, even after I've not been using it much and it meant I had no way of getting home as I was going to get an Uber.
This needs to be upgraded in priority. Sort it out, Google.

I started having the issue after a year and a few months of ownership, it started a shutting down at 20-30% and contintued to get worse. At 2 years of ownership, it would shut down at 60% during regular use. Full charge to 60% was about 15 minutes of use, unless I was trying to take a picture, which would cause it to shut down unless it was plugged in or fully charged within the last couple minutes.
I had the battery replaced last Friday by a local repair shop. The battery drain is back to how it was new, but it just shut down at 60% and wouldn't turn back on until I started charging it again. This is with a NEW battery.

For me the issue happened even after I replaced my battery, after 6-7 months of normal use (Android 8.1.0 - OPM1.171019.011) last time, stock kernel . On my Nexus 6P seems to be related to app behavior : AccuBattery app seems to generate this on my device. Once the app is removed, no more reboots. I might be related to one of the battery sensors (temperature most likely). The battery is not an official accessory, since in my country Huawei only whats to replace it by replacing the screen as well.

My phone had the same issue for a few months, tried a factory reset, didn't appear to make much of a difference, but in the last few weeks it's been consistently shutting off around 30%.. I called Google who told me my phone was out of warranty and referred me to Huawei who basically told me the same thing (since it's over 12 months old).. They only offered to replace the battery (with screen) for $163 which is absurd.. poor customer service.. I own several Google (and Nest) products and am considering leaving their ecosystem due to this issue and how they've handled it.. I'm also planning on joining the class action lawsuit against Google and Huawei.. https://chimicles.com/google-nexus-6p-battery-early-shutoff-bootlooping-class-action-investigation/
wd...@gmail.com <wd...@gmail.com> #43
Adding to my comment (#34), most of the sudden shutdowns coincided with using the stock camera app as others have mentioned. Put it back on the charger and restart and the battery % is immediately back to the level it was before the shutdown as seen in this screenshot.
ho...@eastlink.ca <ho...@eastlink.ca> #44
Update: After signing out of Google Photos Dec 6th that fix was again, only temporary. My phone started to once again, immediately shutdown while taking photos with the stock camera app in HDR+ mode. I also have experienced the phone shutting down while not even using it - 3 times now at 60-70% battery. I cleared the cache yesterday and I just returned from my mobile repair shop with yet another new battery (3rd one). This is the last time I will try new battery (different batch this time). If the phone continues to shutdown, I am positive it is a software issue. I too will not buy another Google phone due of the lack of support of a known issue. My Nexus 6P was my first android phone after being an exclusive Blackberry fangirl, I will now purchase from Apple, because they genuinely support their products.

I am having the same issue. When taking a picture using the stock camera app and HDR+ (Not sure if it happens when HDR+ is turned off and perhaps with another camera app) the phone suddenly shuts off and I have to plug in an external power source to boot it back up. Just spent 3.5 hours chatting with both Google Fi support and Huawei regarding this issue. Google says contact Huawei, Huawei says talk to the vendor I purchased it from. Last year, I was dealing with powering down at about 15% but, more recently, it shuts off between 30-40%. If I charge it just enough to turn back on, the battery level still shows 30-40% before powering down after a minute or two. So I guess to all of those who bought the phone from someone besides Google/Huawei, don't feel too bad: I bought mine from Google and they refuse to do anything other than try to sell me a new phone. I had to ask one of the reps to "please stop trying to sell me a phone" while we waited on her supervisor for 30 minutes.
Far cry from the Google Fi support I spent the first year raving about to friends and family. I've been using Nexus phones since the Galaxy Nexus launch in 2010. I will be dropping my Fi service and signing with another carrier within the next couple of weeks.

I am getting the same issue. Literally just turned phone on after charging for the night and already down to 83% after 20 mins.
Any suggestions

Same issue here; phone is dying at 20-30%, and sometimes even 50%. Google refuses to help, even though I bought the phone from them, as well as Huawei. Already wiped my phone and all of that jazz.
wd...@gmail.com <wd...@gmail.com> #60
No one is going to fix it. I just gave up and retired the Nexus. My battery life was degrading, the sudden shut downs were unpredictable, I needed my phone for the 2 to 4 hours of calls for work per day. I could not afford to have it crash while on a global conference call. I gave up. You can post on here all you want, but nothing will be resolved. Just move on and get a replacement.

So, how Google fix this HW bug? Do they have any physical support center at Silicon Vally?
Do they have a recall plan for Nexus 6P?
I trusted Google's products and now I'm.deeply disappointed 😞

Hey folks, this is Not a software issue, it is simplly a significant battery aging issue just like the recent iPhone models.

Wow and i thought my nexus shutting down when at 15% was bad, if this is in fact a battery ageing (less than 2 year old) issue i wont be replacing it with a google phone that is for sure!

This is also my issue. My battery is new from the Huawei Support Center last November. Thanks.

Me too. Attempting Huawei repair as I'm out of warranty and purchased from Best Buy. :(
Hopefully I'll get another year for my $164 repair fee.

Mine started a couple months ago. I got an add on battery but that doesn't stop the 6p from shutting down. It would seem the beta tester program would take some responsibility for this, but I guess not.
BTW this one seems to trigger shutting down with both the camera and the phone call. Seems to die when I start or answer a call

Same issue here. Phone turns of without any warning. Will not turn on until connected to charger. After powering up, battery level says e.g. 15%. Warranty is out and comments here seem to state that at battery replacement won’t help. Could officials please comment on this widespread problem?

Same problem. At the beginning was happening when it was around 15%, but recently it's almost random between 10% and 50%.
I hope there is a solution to this issue soon.

Seems like so many of us are facing the same issue but neither Huawei or Google are offering any form of fix/update.
Kinda meaningless to keep making so many reports if the makers of the Nexus 6P are unwilling to help rectify and retain loyal Nexus users.

In my case, both my wife & I have a Nexus 6p, both have the same problem. even worse when it's cold.
The issue seems to always be linked with lauching a Google app, either Maps or the camera app will cause the phone to go to energy saving and then shutdown, and then it won't start back until it's on charge (at which point it reboorts, and sitll reports a battery % way higher than zero,).

Same problem of many of us. The battery of my Nexus 6p goes down to few point percent (1%-3%) and shutdown almost instantly, even if the battery was 50%.
gi...@gmail.com <gi...@gmail.com> #75
I have the same issue. Whenever the battery is anywhere below ~35%, it will at a random point shut off without warning. Google has failed to provide proper support regarding this matter. There is no way to even contact a customer support representative. I was very happy with this phone up until this point.

I have the same problem. Phone immediately shuts off and wont let me turn it back on unless I charge it. When its turned on it says its on 15-20%, or even higher than what it was when it turned off. I bought this in Sep 2016, and it was fine until now.

Shuts down automatically with different battery levels 50-70% most common. Have done battery replacement and still has issue
The fact this isn't a recall is surprising. I have had a need for car service in a part of town I'm not familiar with, with my phone unable to turn it a horrible feeling. I would argue unsafe and negligent on behalf of Google.
People rely on their phones to ensure safe transport and communication.
I don't know what to do, if Google doesn't acknowledge the problem and fix, it leads me to believe they may not fix other issues.....I'm invested in the Google platform, only reason I haven't switched.

My Nexus 6P, and my wife's Nexus 6P both have the issue as well. My phone shuts off at 50% or lower. My wife's phone, which HAS a replaced battery, still shuts off at 30%. It used to shut off at any point, making the phone very unreliable.
This has been the best most high-end phone we've ever had, but now we can't rely on them, it's very disappointing.

Same issue here. It's very disappointing. This is still a great phone and it seems to be a software related issue (when you plug the charger and start the phone, it resume with the battery level it had when it shut down).
Can we still expect at least an explanation from Google and/or a workaround? It's clear now that the issue won't be fixed.
I always had nexus phones and I'm definitely not ready to spend more money in Pixels if the support is the same. What a shame.

I am having battery issue since I updated to 8.1. Battery runs out way faster and even it says that 30% battery is remaining then also phone shuts off without any warning! Any solution to this problem? Phone was performing very well before this 8.1 update.
Is google coming out with any patch or any updates?
l loved this phone but it has become a liability!!!

Same goes for me. Even after replacing battery it shuts down while using either Maps, making photos in the Camera app. It can't boot until connected to a charger. Happens at any % of charge.
Unfortunately the workaround for me is looking for an another vendor. Google, you still can't produce a good hardware! :'(

Does anyone else find that after the premature shutdown and plugging in and restarting, there are always updates from the Play Store waiting to install?
This happens on my 6P almost every time, and I wonder if the update handler has a bug in determining whether it is safe to proceed with updates on battery only and then does something like calling <shutdown device> instead of <shutdown update process>.

pa...@gmail.com <pa...@gmail.com> #84
Never noticed about those updates that but i'll be careful. Thing is, why can't we start the phone afterwards then without plugging the charger? It has to be related to some low level firmware.
I replaced my battery as it's told everywhere to "fix" this issue and I still have the issue with the new battery. It's even worse now. It happens around 50-55% and I even got 76%.
If it related to the physical battery (like battery not capable to provide enough power on wake up), why replacing the battery is working for some people and not for others?
Come on, can we have a bit of explanation about what is going on?
The N6P is a good phone and this issue is really frustrating !
I definitely won't buy a pixel phone if the support is the same!

I have two nexus 6p's and both on 8.1.0 but only one seems to have a problem at the moment. I chatted with Google Nexus support but since I purchased my devices through newegg.com and not the play store there was not a whole lot they could do. I had already tried a Factory data reset and a cache wipe as well as attempting to drain the battery while booted into recovery and then charging. Google support suggested contacting Huawei to replace the battery. I contacted Huawei but since my warranty is up it will cost about $164 and my wife would be without her phone for at least 7-10 days. There are battery replacement kits on Amazon for under $20 but I can't vouch for the quality of the batteries so the $164 seems really expensive. The Huawei repair warranty is 90 days which doesn't seem like much. Wondering if I would be better off buying a cheaper phone for the $164 instead of repairing or go all in on Apple (at least they seem to have OS updates for more that 2 years and resale value seems to be much better, Nexus 6P trade in on a pixel 2 seems to be $58). Really frustrated by this issue. Spent the whole day trying to get somewhere with this and it's just going to be hard on my wallet no matter what. Phones really should last longer, I use laptops for a decade, why can't a phone last for 4-5 years?

is there not some kind of fix offered by the manufacture? Doing it DIY is
not for the faint of hart and to have it done is quite pricey.
I know at one time google was offering a replacement phone but halted that
practice. they should a least offer a reasonable discount on a another
phone to keep customer loyalty

I had exactly the same problem with my 8p battery draining to around 50-60% in less than an hour then jumping to 0-3% and shutting down immediately. I replaced the battery myself a few months ago (it's really not difficult, plenty of YouTube tutorials) and it had been perfect since. I use it quite a lot and there is usually over 40% battery left when I charge it before bed. I know this doesn't work for everyone but it certainly did for me. Worth a go for under £20
