So sharing plain text is usually decent fast but as soon as I use the
intent on images it gets slower with the WhatsApp app taking the slowest to
pop up the upper/people section of it.
In WhatsApp it is 100% slow.

note that it not only happens in whatsapp but other apps like chrome etc as
well. certainly seems worse when you use the share intent for the first
time and gets faster on the next uses. caching i guess.

I'm experiencing this well. It loads super slow and often it jumps when I go press my share method causing a false share and I have to start the process of over. I primarily share with 6 contacts using Android Messages or Gmail. I do not need the the option to share via Twitter because I rarely share that way.
st...@gmail.com <st...@gmail.com> #10
Ideally the apps and people that show up in the upper part should be configurable, I think. So they would not have to run an extensive query to figure out what to show each time. Or, if not as an option, just don't refresh the list each time the share dialog opens, so cache it and refresh once an hour or so.

PLEASE STOP COMMENTING ON THIS THREAD UNLESS YOU ARE ADDING USEFUL INFORMATION. Every time someone comments, everyone who has starred the issue gets an email notification. It's very annoying. If you want to show support for fixing this issue, just click the star! +1 comments are not necessary! Thank you!

@bi...@gmail.com it seems you are not aware that "starring", by default, adds that comment.

Isn't this weird. Google has so many good products but this issue tracker isn't one of them. The general public is invited to comment on and provide infos about issues but they made it so anytime a new comment is added, everyone who had something to do with the issue gets an email. Quite unneccessary if you ask me but it has the nice side effect of creating these groups of likeminded people, their bond lying in the fact that they all felt that some issue was important enogh for them to star it or comment on it.
Anyways, we're probably all coming from that one article that linked here so that's that.
Hello and good day, group of random likeminded people.

Hello Google/Android Team,
Other than reading the AndroidPolice article already reported above (https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/05/05/google-please-fix-androids-slow-bloated-share-ui/ ), please also confirm us that - despite what's written in the title - you're gonna keep this issue open and look for it as a matter of urgency for it to be fixed in the final release of Android P.
Thank you.

I agree this issue is hindering the user experience in sharing. On an unrelated note, how do I make issue tracker comments not show up in my inbox? Causes quite a lot of clutter.

This definitely needs fixing.
For the guys wondering how not to get notifications go to Settings and change your notification settings to minimal. Will probably effect on all issues notifications not just this one

On thing that bothers me on the share dialog, if how, after an initial loading with some icons, it will load extra icons for sharing to frequent hangouts or whatsapp contacts. The problem is that, while doing that, the icons change position, and not once, I was tapping on an icon that changed place and ended opening share to one I didn't wanted, had to cancel the operation, start from zero, and the second time wait a few seconds until the frequente contacts load, before tapping any icon on share dialog.
This is REALLY bad usability.

I don't understand. You guys remove clearing cache, setting priority of notifications of apps that don't have notification channels and SYSTEM_OVERLAY yet you don't FIX something? How about you stop restricting and removing stuff and fix stuff?

I would like to also add that it's pretty messed up that 'Copy to Clipboard' only shows up if Google Drive is installed. If you uninstall Google Drive, you also lose 'Copy to Clipboard' as an option in 'Share'.
There's an old article around the time that mentions this here:
https://www.androidpolice.com/2012/11/29/tip-drives-latest-update-adds-global-copy-to-clipboard-option-in-the-share-menu/
This should be fixed, Google Drive should not be required to use the clipboard...

Fixed in Android 10:

re...@gmail.com <re...@gmail.com> #47
Not fully - it is faster, but direct share is as useless as it was, still can't disabled and wastes two row of icons.
They also removed ability to pin apps (but list is now alphabetic, so you can at least remember position of your favorite apps).

da...@gmail.com <da...@gmail.com> #48
Ah yes you're right – Direct Share is only showing random Messages recipients for me (e.g. 2FA verification senders) and app pinning is indeed removed. Two steps forward; one step back!

Still no way to hide share options for apps I never share stuff with? seriously? Coming from iPhone I should be able to expect more customizability than on iOS, but Apple got it figured out with their share menu...
mg...@sent.at <mg...@sent.at> #50
I don't think they're going to fix this. They don't care. For things like hiding useless share items, the only thing end users can do is use Xposed modules like L Tweaks to hide share providers, or they their luck with apps like Sharedr (which has some major limitations). Additionally, we need to encourage developers to add toggles in their apps for some of these share options, because not everyone has full control over their device and can use XPosed (or they may just submit to the demands of Google / Their Bank in order to use certain apps). The issue is many people use a lot of apps by Google, who neither care about the plight of the end user, nor do they adhere to their own UX guidelines. I think Google Maps is quite possibly the worst share UI I've ever used.

My share sheet is so slow, I often see "No recommended people to share with" in the direct-share section when trying to share an image or link.
I posted about this issue on Reddit in android_beta because it started happening to me in Android 11 beta (currently beta 2), usually when I try to share an image from Facebook or Chrome. From the responses there, I think this only happens to some users.
https://www.reddit.com/r/android_beta/comments/h7xu1h/no_direct_sharing_shortcuts_for_me_android_11/
I tried a factory reset, reinstalled all my apps, and it still happens. I'm using a Pixel 3 XL.

I still have insanely irrelevant suggestions of specific contacts in each app. Like WhatsApp, Outlook Mobile, Google Messages. It's suggesting to send to threads or contacts in each of those apps that have been idle for a year or more.
Better in some ways. But the suggestions are awful. They should be taken away and be most common entire applications maybe.

jo...@gmail.com <jo...@gmail.com> #56
Yes, the share sheet is still awful. That's probably the reason why a lot
of apps have their own pre share screen before using the system one, even
some Google apps. The sheet is supposed to learn with my use of the system,
but in my case I basically never get suggestions for the apps I use the
most. All the popular apps appear there, probably hardcoded, but if you use
less popular apps they likely won't show up there, like a 3rd party client
for Telegram for example.

Mine is also constantly surfacing contacts I do not ever message. Ever. It often suggests people I have no history of ever conversing with, they just happen to exist in my address book or some social network link.
Description
If the issue is not due to a platform bug, we will do our best to notify the developer. However, note that it is the up to the the developer to actually address reported issues.
Before logging your issue, check to see whether it is a known issue described in the current release notes at:
or has already been reported at:
If the issue has already been reported, you can "star" or comment on the existing report if it corresponds to the issue you are seeing.
To expedite resolution of your issue, please provide as much relevant and specific information as possible. This will probably require some work from you. Most reports should include at least the following:
* Which Developer Preview build are you using? See Settings > About phone > Build number (for example OPP5.170921.005).
OPP5.170921.005
* What device are you using? (for example, Pixel XL)
Pixel XL
* What are the steps to reproduce the problem? (Please provide the minimal reproducible test case.)
Trigger the share intent
* Issue Category e.g. Framework (platform), NDK (platform), Hardware (CPU, GPU, Sensor, Camera), ART (platform), Runtime Permissions etc
* What was the expected result?
Both parts of the share intent flyout open fast
* What was the actual result?
The general (apps) part opens fast but the personal (people) part takes ages
* Relevant logcat output.
* Optional: Link to any screenshot(s) that demonstrate the issue (shared privately in Drive.)
* Optional: Link to captured Android bug report (shared privately in Drive.)
To avoid leaking private information, please share screenshots and downloads only in Google Drive. Share files with android-bugreport@google.com and include only links in your bug reports. Bug report attachments should not be included directly in issue reports.
So this issue is pretty old and actually has nothing to do with the current 8.1 dev program but it is still present and as annoying as ever.
The Share Intent is super slow. The first part that pops up, the general apps part, usually opens very fast but the second, people, part takes AGES to open. The worst part is that the whole UI tends to shift around a bit after it finally loads and it is just a horrible UX. If the slowness can't be fixed, can there at least be an option to turn the people part off? I rarely use it and it is super annoying to have to wait for it to load before the general part responds to taps.
