to dn...@google.com in post #5, I have a log as well.
However as previously mentioned, I would prefer not posting it in a publicly accessible manner for privacy reasons. Is there a "secure" mailbox I can send it to? I posted my GPG key if needed.
Also attached is a more recent log of it occurring repeatedly. So those anecdotal Reddit reports about it happening non-stop, have now been replicated in a reproducible manner and logged.

ni...@gmail.com <ni...@gmail.com> #13
I am having the same issue...
dr...@gmail.com <dr...@gmail.com> #14
Seems to be directly related to the charging brick that came with Pixels, not the cable. I am using my pixel USB-C to USB-C cable and my Nexus 6P brick and have had no issues, even when charging from very low such as 10%. It does take longer to charge with the 6P brick, which is due to the lower output of that brick I assume?
sh...@gmail.com <sh...@gmail.com> #15
Having this issue for a good while but cannot identify since which version like OP. Thought my charger had gone bad... Thanks for reporting the issue. Very frustrating when you want to sleep and it's <15% so keeps waking the screen with a notification.
ry...@gmail.com <ry...@gmail.com> #16
Same issue here. Google rma'd the charger but no change. Then they rma'd the pixel XL and the replacement exhibits the same issue.
an...@gmail.com <an...@gmail.com> #17
Same issue here. Have noticed this since the 8.1 beta on my Pixel XL. Good to know I'm not crazy ;)
le...@gmail.com <le...@gmail.com> #18
Same for me. When I'm below 10% of battery and plug in the original C to C cable, it charges but stops immediatly and starts and stops. It wiggles 3-4 times but then it charges normaly until 100%. When I'm starting to charge above 10%, there aren't any problems. Also there arent' any problems charging with any other USB-C cable or charging my Pixel C with the Pixel XL cable. The problem startet with Android 8.1, which both of my devices run with the latest security patch.
dr...@gmail.com <dr...@gmail.com> #19
I thought that my charger was broken. If I'm charging from m15% and below it goes crazy. It starts and stops charging a couple of times. I can reproduce this in safe mode.
I have two official USB C charger and both have the same problem with my Pixel XL. I'm on Android 8.1 with the February. It started with Android 8.1 almost three months ago.

an...@gmail.com <an...@gmail.com> #20
#14, the N6P and its charger aren't PD, and the charger doesn't output 9V, only 5V/3A so this is not a problem with it. It would be with other chargers that do 9V/2A max. If you have a charger that actually does the 9V/3A power rule it may be bad for the phone since it'd be trying to charge at higher power than it was designed for, though presumably it would throttle quickly due to heat.
lu...@gmail.com <lu...@gmail.com> #21
I'm having the same issue on my Pixel 1 XL. I have two official USB C-C chargers that no longer charge my Pixel (no matter what the current charge is when I attempt), and the only way to charge it after the 8.1 update applied this past weekend (Verizon OTA update) is to use the included USB A-C cable. I contacted support but they're only solution (since I'm a couple of weeks past the 1 year warranty) is to send in my phone and wait 10 business days for a replacement, which is unacceptable.
b....@gmail.com <b....@gmail.com> #22
Same issue for me. Prior to Oreo,i dint see this problem. Once i updated to Oreo, once i plugin original google 18 W USB C to C cable and charger, charging icon says disconnected and connected again for some time.
The charging current as per Ampere and Accubattery is constant which is 1860A.
This was approx 2600 A earlier if battery charge is lesser than 70% to 80%.
Assume somone setup limitation to charging current for increasing battery longevity.
However ,Rapid charge is no more really 'Rapid' or 'Fast'.

Same issue here. C to C didn't charge at all, C to A was fine. Tried 3 different Pixel OEM c to c chargers. Now it charges but initial minute of charging, the phone slows down considerably as if some process is killing the CPU, then it charges at very low current, 30mA to 200 mA unless I reboot and then it goes to an amp or so.
he...@gmail.com <he...@gmail.com> #24
I am having the same issue and have isolated it to the charging block that came with the phone and using C to C cable. I have replaced each thinking they may be faulty, but the issue persists.

We are experiencing the same issue. We have tried multiple charges and charging is intermittent at best. This should be a P0/S0 (at least a P1/S1) as it blocks people using the phone when the battery can't be charged. Can someone please bump up the priority?

What's going on here Google? You guys need to fix this issue asap. It's unacceptable to have a charger that doesn't work anymore. Same situation with me, OEM charger and USB C cable not charging the phone anymore. My Pixel XL doesn't even recognize it anymore, it's like nothing is plugged in. Tried different cables and oem chargers and no luck. Please address this issue ASAP! I'm charging through my car using the USB A-C cable at the moment and it's not a viable long term solution. Not impressed from Google's flagship product.
ko...@gmail.com <ko...@gmail.com> #32
I've also been experiencing this for the last 3 months. I have resorted to putting away the OEM charger and USB C-C cable and am now only using a third party USB A non-PD based charger with the USB A-C OEM cable as I am concerned this bug may cause damage to my phone and/or charger. Any update on this issue is appreciated.

Come on Google. I have reported this personally many times from various Pixel phones ever since 8.1 came out months ago. As I stated this has started since 8.1 update on all the pixels I know using the original pixel charger that came with it! Very irritating bug. You don't need a bug report, as with other issues just go and get a pixel and you will see the issue!

I also am experiencing this issue with my OG Pixel XL on 8.1. I'm using the stock charger and it does this every time I plug it in. Didn't do it on 8.0.
ma...@laurencegough.com <ma...@laurencegough.com> #41

This issue happens on my 2016 Pixel XL as well, consistently 100% of the time, both with the stock charger and the 87W Apple MacBook charger. It's worse/more frequent at lower battery levels, especially below 15%. It began occurring as soon as I updated to 8.1.
fa...@gmail.com <fa...@gmail.com> #44

an...@gmail.com <an...@gmail.com> #56
I'm having the same issue. I realized it, after my phone went into energy saving mode yesterday. After connecting it to the official charger, it switched forth and back between energy saving mode and the normal mode three times, until charging stabilized. Also, my PC throws an error, when I connect the phone directly via USB 3. The error message states, that the bus doesn't have enough resources to power the device. If I connect it to the USB 2 port with another controller, however, it works. I can also make it work by putting a USB power meter between my PC and the USB cable. I guess, that the device can't handle USB 3 and therefore reduced the maximum load. When I use the meter, the charging power falls down to 0.222 Watts.

dr...@gmail.com <dr...@gmail.com> #59
Yes, using the lower power nexus 6P C to C charger I have not experienced the issue any more, but my Pixel XL now can not take advantage of the fast charging and charging now takes much much longer than it should. How can we increase the priority/severity of this issue to get it fixed?

Tried to deal with support for TWO HOURS today. They repeatedly offered to send me a different Pixel XL and a new charger. Over and over again I told them the issue is a software/firmware thing and affects every Pixel XL on 8.1 so a new phone would not fix the issue. Over and over again they offered me a replacement phone (OG XL) and charger.
They said they've never heard of this issue.
I sent this this page on the issue tracker.
I sent them a thread on the Google product forums.
I sent them website articles.
I sent them to reddit.
I sent them quotes from user after user experiencing this.
I tried to get it escalated so many times.
I got offered a replacement Pixel XL again.
I'm done with Google and the Pixel line, this as the most frustrating customer service experience of my life and a company with a potential FIRE HAZARD issue should probably attempt to do better.
Shawn at Google support, YOU ARE THE WORST.

Pixel XL, 32GB here. (Currently Android 8.1 march security update)
I have exactly the same issue. But we have one more issue that comes with it which is much more important to call out!
I exchanged my Pixel XL 2 times. All 3 units had the charging issue. But also all 3 were starting to drop heavily in performance from time to time (In games down to 2-3 FPS, making it impossible to play!!)!
The bugs don't seem to be fixed in Android Part alpha. Maybe it'll be fixed by the next Google I/O in may with the Android O beta 1. Apart from that, this is just shocking! I never expected that my Pixel XL which cost me 900€ would EVER slow down in any case again! I thought we finally beat the performance hoggers. And I never even dreamed that a charging bug could ever occur on more than a few thousand units....

I'm having the same issue with my pixel XL. Why is the status listed as "fixed" for this?
le...@gmail.com <le...@gmail.com> #100
Fixed means the issue is fixed in code at Google. It has to be reviewed and approved and then QA tested. It was listed as fixed in code just before the April release which would have been too soon for it to be pushed out. So hopefully it will be in the May release.
fa...@gmail.com <fa...@gmail.com> #101
Is there a "Status:Fix in QA" option? That would prevent confusion and also prevent getting our inboxes full of "I can confirm that the fix is not working" comments.

I am also having this issue with a refurbished phone from woot/Amazon. I was seconds away from emailing woot figuring it was a hardware problem. I'm glad it is not because I'm pretty sure the answer would be return, not exchange, and then I'd not have a phone at all. But I'm not encouraged by how long this issue had been open.
By the way, how do I subscribe to this issue so I know when there have been posts, possibly a fix?

jo...@gmail.com <jo...@gmail.com> #104
I can also confirm that the newest April update did not fix the issue. I updated my device and it was able to charge from 1% to 100% using rapid charging, but only a day later it doesn't charge at all using same charger. I can still get the "charging slowly" indicator when using the USB-A to USB-C cable, but that's pretty slow and inconvenient.
da...@gmail.com <da...@gmail.com> #105
I thought I had this issue but now I think it's just that the cable is disconnecting ever-so-slightly from the port because it's a little loose. This happens with the cable that came with the phone. It's just not as tight as it needs to be to maintain a connection. Anyways, that seems to be the cause of my inconsistent charging.
o....@gmail.com <o....@gmail.com> #106
That's definitely not the cause of my charging issue. I can tell because
the charger adapter overheats, which is consistent with overcurrent
behavior. Still waiting for a fix to roll out.

I was experiencing a very similar issue, and eventually was unable to charge the phone at all through any means (every type of cable and brick/battery pack I own). It would say it was charging but the battery would still drop even with no usage. Last night I decided to try a factory reset, and low and behold I was able to get it to fast charge back to 100% using the c-to-c cable and brick that came with the phone. Not sure if anyone else has tried, but it seems to have worked for me.

Experiencing the same issue on my Pixel XL. When I first connect the charger, it will show indicate that the phone is charging. Then it will connect and disconnect multiple times before finally stabilizing and charging normally. Seems to be a common issue related to the 8.1 update. Disappointing that Google can't be bothered to fix it.

I had charger problems which resolved as follows: Pixel 2 XL phone: First, the problem appeared to be that I was not getting a good charger connection. Sometimes it worked but only if USB-C plugged in in one orientation, flipped 180 degrees and it would change from charging to not charging or vice-versa. Then I found that an old charger with a micro USB plug with an adapter to Type C plug seemed to work. Finally, it also became apparent that whenever it did seem to start to charge it turned the phone off. That is, with phone on, plug in charger cable, phone turned off, and showed charging battery symbol. Called Google support. One of the things they asked me to do, ostensibly to see if problem was charger related, was to plug the phone into a computer USB port. (As an aside, the problem occurred using multiple google chargers of the new, USB type-C, fast-charging variety, so it was not a charger HW problem per se.) Back to the story--Once I plugged phone into the computer USB port, using cable with USB-C plug on phone end, it showed the phone as charging normally and it did not turn off the phone. In fact, from that moment on it has worked fine (i.e., normally) with all my chargers. My theory is that the USB communications which occur automatically and behind-the-scenes when you plug into a computer port fixed whatever was corrupted on the phone's USB interface. Must be some non-volatile memory associated with the USB that was corrupted - and I think the phone was expecting a firmware update as [not mentioned earlier] I did observe a firmware update screen come up at one point which I assumed I had accidentally initiated by pushing some combination of power on/off and volume buttons, however, I saw this screen only after I was already experiencing the problem. tl;dr: See if plugging a phone cable into computer USB (type A) port resolves your issues.

I have the same issue.
The charger that came with the phone stopped working and the two replacements chargers (w/ cable) Google sent me and replacement USB-C cable also do not work.
I have been able to confirm that the charger blocks work using a "USB-A to Micro-USB cable" with a "micro-USB to USB-C adapter" and the "USB-A to USB-C dongle" that came with the phone.
However, USB-A to USB-C dongle that came with the phone must be plugged into the charger block.
Installed Ampere and the phone seems to now be able to detect the OEM chargers when plugged in and keeps flickering between charging and not charging.

I don't want to spam the issue tracker, but my official in-the-box Google supplied USB A to C cable started smoking in my lap. This is ridiculous. Would this have happened if the failsafe in the phone to prevent taking too much charge was working? I don't know. But I think it's very bad that a serious charging issue hasn't been fixed in what, four months? I don't think Apple would have level of standard in their products.

Before the May update using the stock charger my device would show charging at 2a on the stock charger after it was able to negotiate and stabilize a charging mode. Now on the stock charger it shows 2.9a, so I'm wondering if it is now charging via 5v 3a @ 15W vs 9v 2a @ 18w.
ad...@gmail.com <ad...@gmail.com> #122
After leaving it for some time and checking in on it again, it seems to be showing a charge rate of 2a in ampere again which I think would be 9v 2a. Maybe they changed charging so that it starts at 15w and steps up to 18w after a bit so it doesn't overload the stock charger. I have a car charger that can do much more than 9v 2a, and I've seen my Pixel XL show 3.5a charging on that one (but I have no idea what voltage that's at).

With my Pixel XL a reboot of the phone while plugged into the quick charger C-C will cause the phone to charge (quickly). Once unplugged, however, it won't go back into charge mode until the phone is rebooted once again. Lower power charger A-C works all the time.

Mine only normal charges when using it to USB adapter device (not charger to wall). It suppose to charge fast but it becomes very rare. When plugging it into my desktop, USB 3 (not sure what one 3.1 or 3.0) A port it charges normal but USB C port it used to rapid charge and now only slow charges.
I recently unlocked boot loader on my Verizon pixel xl and erased the os and installed 7.1 and all worked fine rapid charge and normal charging. Though I did notice having developer debug on caused slow charge.
Installed custom ROM and issue persist their so my conclusion is this is a Firmware bug.

I have a Pixel XL 128MB running 8.1.0 with the June 5, 2018 Android security patch level. Pretty much the same as comment #131 . If I reboot while the phone is plugged into the OEM wall wart with the OEM USB-C to USB-C cable it will charge. Once unplugged it will no longer charge with the same setup. Using the OEM USB Type-A to USB-C cable always works on lower power USB chargers.

After May update phone started having various issues, overheating when charging, then overheating just by itself. Microphone stopped working, went to UBreakIFix as instructed by Google support. UBIF replaced the motherboard and said that Google was paying for the repair, and they instructed me not to upgrade to 8.1 because the OS is what caused the issue.
Not sure if this is related, but it seems like the update may have caused overcharging issues leading to general motherboard issues. Now I'm stuck with Nougat, not sure what I can safely upgrade to.

I was getting the constant on again and off again charging described originally on my pixel xl and 2 OEM C to C chargers. After the May update it was resolved. Now with the June update I am having the same issue as #131, and #133. Phone will only charge once on reboot with the C to C cable. Unplugging the cable means it wont charge again until rebooted. USB A to C chargers, a C to C car charger, and the A-C adapter with the C to C cable and OEM charger all work fine. Hoping the July update fixes this.

I have been having this issue a lot recently on my Pixel XL with the most recent OTA update. Even if I do nothing on the phone and have it in the AC it still reboots and says it was do to it getting to hot. Most of the time I can feel that the phone did in fact get warm but other times it doesn't even feel that warm to the touch when it reboots. I am not using any type of case on the phone. My phone is set to backup images/movies when it is plugged in and connected to Wifi which causes the problem to happen A LOT quicker and almost causes it to go into a reboot loop every time the backing up starts (yep, I know Wifi antennas and also cell antennas create heat). So I disabled that option and now need to backup photos/videos when not charging however that drains my battery and then I'm stuck with a low battery and needing to recharge my phone all over again which causes multiple reboots because of 'overheating'.
Why can't Google put an option in to allow us to turn off fast charging? Samsung has the option in their settings yet Google doesn't? That's just sad. Granted they did basically make an exploding torch of a phone at one point -- so I guess I can understand them having that option ;-)
I know this issue says it was fixed -- but I've been having the issue since back in February/March and been living with it waiting for that supposed fix to happen.... Even did a factory reset after I had the issue still in Safe Mode and that did not seem to resolve the issue.

I am having this issue now. OEM chargers would rarely work, now I am having issues where the OEM's don't work at all, the only charger I am able to get it to charge is a car Nintendo Switch charger. Not even the Switch wall charger will get it charging but occasionally and it just says its doing regular charging. I have also done USB-A -> C from a laptop and it will charge on the low power charging mode. Confirmed, the issue is with the rapid charging. Any updates on when this will be officially fixed? Or how to disable rapid charging until its fixed?

So to add to the strangeness to this, My phone sometimes does charge, but incredibly strangely it only allows one type of entry to the USB C plug, even though ambi-entry is a feature of USB C. I've had to mark the plug so I know which way is "up" for charging. This doesn't always work, and sometimes I have to revert back to rebooting the phone with the plug plugged in, otherwise no charging will occur.

Only way to charge it shut down phone, plug cable then turn on phone. This means nothing related with hardware, it's only software problem.
Hope Google will release update to other manufacturers also and they will fix problem for other devices.

Around Oct, my Pixel XL stopped charging with the original wall charger but it will charge with the google USB A-C cord or other brand. 2 days ago, the Pixel stopped charging with any methods. I have a wall charger with dual USB with LED lights. The lights are on when plugged into the wall or charging other devices. When I try to charge the Pixel, the lights would go off. Also, the 2nd device being charge would stop. So when I plug the Pixel, the wall charger would shut down.

This issue still occurs frequently when charging my device from a lower battery percentage (generally anywhere under ~60%), even though my OG Pixel 32 GB has the latest updates (Android 9, Dec 2018 patch). This problem has been happening since I updated to Android 8.1 (if I'm remembering the version correctly). No software update has yet to fix this issue; not sure why it's marked as "Fixed" on this tracker. I always use the provided USB-C to C cable and AC adapter, yet the on and off cycle still occurs. Hopefully a software update can actually fix it soon.

Is this resolved????
Description
Android version: 8.1.0 OPM1.17109.012
Submitter notes:
Appears to be a regression bug specifically in 8.1.0 OPM1. It is noted in widespread reports (such as on Reddit). This behavior did not exist when a charging study was performed on Nov 11, 2017. (8.0.0 OPR1?)
==========================================
- Steps to reproduce the problem (including sample code if appropriate).
(1) Update Pixel 1 XL to 8.1.0 OPM1.
(2) IMPORTANT: Drain battery to <50%, so phone will actually attempt to draw significant current when charging.
(3) Press power button to lock screen, put phone in screen-off sleep.
(4) Connect OEM 18w charger to OEM 2m cable.
(5) Connect TotalPhase USB Power Delivery Analyser to bottom of Pixel. Enable live Vbus voltage & current logging.
(6) Connect cable to bottom of Pixel 1 XL (with analyser).
==========================================
- What happened.
(A) Observe battery icon in system tray, and text on now-awake lock screen.
It will display "charging rapidly" and show battery-lightning bolt icon. This icon will dissapear -- then reappear.
[Per other user reports, this may occur repeatedly. Getting worse with lower battery level.]
(B) Observe TotalPhase voltage/current graph.
The Pixel 1 XL will negotiate USB-PD 9v/2a level.
However, it proceeds to initially draw up to 2.8a/9v -- well in excess of the charger's 2a capabilities.
(See attached: "Google18w_OEM2m_Pixel1XL8.1.PNG")
After 2-3 seconds, the Google 18w charger will recognize this hazardous fault. The charger will abruptly shut off and reboot.
Upon rebooting, the Pixel will ramp current to a more reasonable 1.5a/9v. However, the current draw is still highly erratic.
[IMPORTANT: Other chargers may not be so robust as Google's [re: shutoff-type overcurrent protection]. Although unlikely, this may result in a potentially hazardous situation.]
==========================================
- What you think the correct behavior should be.
(A) The charging indicators should not flicker on and off repeatedly.
(B) The OEM 18w charger [and others] should not have their USB-PD contracts violated. Nor be overcurrented, causing charger faults.
==========================================
Errata:
I did a study on the Pixel 1 XL charging behavior on Nov 11, 2017. (8.0.0 OPR1?) Please note the *much smoother* current draw on identical hardware at 1.8a (9v). This suggests it is an issue with the battery charge controller logic.
(See attached: "Google18w_OEM2m_Pixel1XL8.0.PNG")
Additional tests were conducted with Google 22.5W charger. The "inside" port was loaded with a dummy load to 15w, to force the "outside" port to advertise 7.5w (5v/1.5a) via the CC-line analog voltage pullup. (This is as opposed to USB-PD signaling.)
In these conditions, the Pixel 1 XL running 8.1.0 OPM1 did NOT overcurrent the Google charger. Basic current ramping occurred to the appropriate limit of 1.5a/5v. This again suggests it is an issue with the battery charge controller logic.
(See attached: "Google22.5w_BottomPortPreempt7.5w_Pixel1XL8.1.PNG")
