Upon more testing myself, it looks like an additional home button press is being invoked when swiping home. You can verify this within Nova Launcher by setting a "Home button" action in Nova Settings > Gestures and inputs. Observe that the additional action you set will also be activated occasionally when you swipe home. In the attached screen recording, I've set the extra home button action to open the Google Assistant.
Tapping the screen during the return-to-home transition on the past couple Android releases would cancel the animation and you'd instantly end up on your home screen. It looks like that's what is happening here as well -- the extra invocation of the home button press is cancelling the transition animation (and with Nova, running the action you set if any). I couldn't say whether or not that's related to the content flat out not appearing though.

I am seeing this issue also on my Pixel 7 Pro and Nova 7 with a couple of additions. First there are instances where I will use the home screen gesture and all that I see is my home screen wallpaper and the gesture bar. If I repeat the gesture, my app icons will usually re-appear. I'm not sure that I agree with the previous comments. My home screen gesture is set to app drawer.

Every single time when I try to return wallpaper screen, I need to swipe up, open the window, open apps and swipe to close the out. When I do that it doesn't look like any app, it just appears a clear see-through on the UI part where the app I mean should be and it is showing like part of my wallpaper that fits in that UI space/box where the open app should appear.
This has happened since the very first Android 14 OS and has not been fixed in any capacity yet. Which I have to do this 100% of the time to get to the home screen.

The return-to-home animation starts working if you swipe up and down quickly or try it gently several times. You just need to tickle it a bit and repeat after using recents screen 🥲 They fixed the app closing animation bug so I hope they fix this too before my Pixel 5 stops getting updates. But it doesn't work much better on my Pixel 3 Android 12 either.

Still not fixed with the latest beta
da...@gmail.com <da...@gmail.com> #35
I note this issue is marked as 'fixed', but it is still persisting in the latest beta. Using latest Nova 8 beta on a Pixel 7 Pro. Issues with the screen redrawing going between apps/back to the home screen. Please re-open this issue as it has not been resolved. I do not want to have to rollback to Android 13 and have to restore the phone manually, so please can this be looked at with some urgency ahead of the stable release?
lu...@gmail.com <lu...@gmail.com> #36
It is still broken. Not fixed. Swipe up for home more often then not,
doesn't work. Even opening some apps just opens a blank screen.

I have already applied the home button gesture fix, but it doesn't solve the problem.
There are still sporadic glitches and blank screens when transitioning betwwn an app and the home screen.
I'm glad this workaround has solved the problem for some, but it's still not fixed for me on the latest beta, running Nova 8.0.6 and using a Pixel 7 Pro.

I received the Android 14 update earlier today (build UP1A.231005.007) on my Pixel 7 Pro & I'm using Nova Launcher 8.0.6 and returning to home screen by swiping up is working perfectly fine for me. I had reservations about installing the release version today because when I tried the earlier beta I was effected by this bug and ended up having to roll back to 13 and needed to do a full wipe 😢
di...@gmail.com <di...@gmail.com> #44
I am having the same exact problem.
I installed Android 14 on my Pixel 6 and now the Nova launcher is not working properly. I am using the default Nova Launcher 7 that's currently in the play store.
With Android 14, Nova Launcher is laggy and when I swipe up to go to home screen, many times I get a blank screen with just the wallpaper showing and does not load the app.
If I swipe very very slowly to home screen, it's working fine and apps load fine, however, this is not the expected behavior.

Why does the status say "Fixed" although the issue is clearly still present even in the released A14 version?
Can we expect some resolution please?
Currently resorted to 3 button navigation, but that is no solution. Google, please note that Pixels are also used by power users who do not want to settle with the default featureless launcher.

Well it was fixed for many of us.
I've been using Nova Launcher, and a while back it did break, but then it was fixed. It's been working fine for me for quite a while now.
I hate to say it, but maybe it's something that needs a reinstall for folks still experiencing the issue?

Otherwise, major updates shouldn't be planned around the end of life for a device, this is not very fair nor a good look for Google.

Please let us know when this will be addressed. It's been way too long for
such a glaring error in UX to exist.

Not sure if it's launcher problem or system problem.
I have recently updated to the latest March update 14(AP1A.240305.019.A1) on my P7P
Nova launcher was doind the same, home screen app will disappear sometimes after swiping back to home screen.
I remember I had no issues on Android 13.
Was doing some research on different launcher yesterday, and tried hyperion launcher. Works flawlessly it can even do immersive mode on navigation bar, which is awesome.
You guys should give it a try, maybe the hyperion will solve the problem. It is less customization compare to Nova, but includes all the stuff I need already.

I think I may have stumbled onto the solution. The launchers have a feature
that enables secondary gestures. I turned this off, the ui glitched for a
moment, but then seems to have resolved the issue. In Lynx launcher it is
under settings / gestures.

I'm trying to get this the right people. This might be the way. I apologize
if it isn't.
A minor annoyance for Android 15 is I could be watching something on my
phone and the volume will just disappear. Also the volume level will stay
at what point so like I can have it all the way up. And then somebody tries
to talk to me so I low it all the way down but it stays the same pitch.
And in order to fix it you just have to restart the phone.

Description
(Note: It is the build when sending this report. For exact build reference, please see the attached bugreport.)
What type of Android issue is this? User Interface, Display, or Rendering issue
When did this happen?
Apr 12, 2023 GMT+01:00
What steps would let us observe this issue?
1. Have a third party launcher set as default, preferably one that supports the GestureNavContract. I'm using Nova Launcher.
2. From an app, swipe up to go home.
3. In my experience, a very short swipe prevents the home screen content from drawing, requiring a swipe back or another swipe home to hopefully display the content.
4. A longer swipe is more likely to display the home screen content but the GestureNavContract transition animation is broken on launchers that support it (such as Nova).
What did you expect to happen?
The home screen content draws properly and the GestureNavContract animation works.
What actually happened?
Depending on swipe length, either the home screen content will not draw at all or the animation will be broken. See the repro steps.
How often has this happened?
Every time
What was the effect of this issue on your device usage, such as lost time or work?
Slight
Additional comments
I've tested this with Nova Launcher v7, Nova Launcher v8 beta, Niagara Launcher and Lawnchair Launcher. Nova Launcher and Niagara Launcher support the GestureNavContract and exhibit the same behaviour. Lawnchair Launcher does as well, sans the part about GestureNavContract (as it does not support it).
