This seems to happen the worst with AOD off. You can test it out even with AOD enabled by turning the screen off with the power button and then immediately attempting to fingerprint unlock before the AOD turns on. It will take seconds to come up. If you wait for the AOD to show, it will unlock essentially instantly.

Pretty unfortunate issue here.

Steps to reproduce:

On Android 8.1.0 on a Pixel 2 XL (OPM4.171019.021.E1), go to the Home screen, then turn the screen off using the power button and immediately use the Fingerprint sensor to unlock the device (attempt should happen before AOD activate). You will note that it takes several seconds to unlock. This can be reproduced consistently on my device, immediately after rebooting as well as after the device has been running for several hours.

I can confirm that I'm having the same issue with my Pixel 2 XL after updating to the recent June 2018 OTA security update.

Unlocking the phone using both rear finger sensor and power button to unlock the phone takes a full 1 second for the screen to turn on versus prior to the update that takes only milliseconds.

I'm getting this with my Pixel 2 XL that I received back in October. Here is how I'm able to produce the error with AOD off:

1) Use the fingerprint sensor.
2) Press the power button.
3) Double-tap to see notifications.
4) Lift-up to see notifications.
5) Double-tap the power button to activate the camera.

After June security update pixel 2 xl get slower, even phone app loads slowly

Also happening for me. Enabling AOD remedies this somewhat.
Apps load slowly as well.

Whenever the screen is completely blank, wakeup via fingerprint OR

Yes I'm having this issue too. I noticed it immediately after installing the June security update, as I was used to an immediate wakeup.  Now it takes 1 second.

My Pixel 2 XL is also noticeably slower to wake with fingerprint sensor or power button after June security update. Build number is OPM4.171019.021.E1. Can replicate it repeatedly. Have not tried a factory reset

Also have this issue- display has been slow to wake since 8.1 updated, but this is unacceptably slow from the June patch.

My Pixel 2 doesn't even turn on after the update. I have other push the button several times. The fongo scanner doesn't work.

Pixel 2 XL white 128 gb unlocked here. Same issue happens with my phone taking longer to unlock with Always On Display off. Always On Display on and it unlocks quickly.

I'm having the same issue as the above. Screen is slow to wake when opening with power button or fingerprint scanner.

I would say the same for double tap to wake.....seems just a bit slower to display.

I am having the same issue with pixel 2 XL. Finger print is delayed about 1-2 seconds and power power is the same.

It isn't really a bug in the traditional sense as it was an intentional change (doesn't mean it can't be explored). AOD will mask the issue as the panel is partially on.

Exact same issue here. No AOD on and it's very slow to wake up.  At a glance widget has a mind of its own.  Won't show my weather for days at time, then it shows up for a few hours, then goes away.

2. Enable dt2w (not necessary but apparent when enabled also)
3. Use dt2w or fingerprint reader or power button to wake screen.

AND is on, takes 2-3 seconds to come on,stuttering as it opens. Pixel 2 XL. Very janky. Unable to do anything while it is unlocking. This is not only an annoyance but a safety issue. Needs to  be fixed immediately with a special update.

With "Always on" enabled it takes my Pixel 2 about 5 to 7 seconds to unlock. I timed it a few times. This make using the finger print reader almost useless.  If I disable "Always on" then the phone works correctly and unlocks quickly.  My current consolation is to leave "Always on" enabled, but do the unlock in two steps: Hit the power button to turn the screen on then use the finger print to unlock.  It's actually faster than using the finger print unlock by itself with "Always on" enabled.

Can confirm on my Pixel 2 XL. The latency appears immediately if ambient display is turned off. When ambient display is turned back on, the problem disappears.

This delay in screen wakeup time has been there on android P DP2.

Same issue here, unfortunately. I don't have the Always On Display enabled and you notice a clear lag during wake up. The phone vibrates to notify me that it recognized my fingerprint, but it takes at least 1-2 seconds before showing something. With AOD turned on it is much quicker.

Same problem here.  Not had the phone many weeks and suddenly it is now slower to turn on than the old Nexus 5X it replaced.  

Testing by Google seems very poor for this not to have been spotted sooner.

Behaviour is inconsistent, I'vw found that sometimes it opens at the regular speed, others it does not.

It seemed to take ages initially but after cycling screen on/off a few times the issue went away. I noticed at least a second difference.

This does not only happen when the device is unlocked / turned on via fingerprint or power button but also when the display has been automatically turned off during a phone call. After the phone call ends the display also needs 2 - 3 seconds to wake up. So it seems to be a general display wake up issue.

I'm having the same issue. Worked without any delay on the May Security update. The same problem interestingly enough also occurs on the Android P Beta.

Given the number of feedback on this issue (and press coverage), I'm actually a bit surprised/disappointed that this is still ranked as P3/S3.
It's giving you a bad rep and making the user experience very frustrating for the most repetitive daily action you perform on your phone. For a LOT of users. On your flagship device.

Slow opening times after the update.

Forget unlocking the phone.. The ENTIRE phone got slower... And I mean SLLOOOOW with the June update... I can watch all graphics render when I change screens... It's like everything is in slow motion and labored.... WTF

I understand the change was to help with screen flicker issues when AOD is on, would I make sense for Google to only have this change go into effect if the user has selected AOD and back to the previous setting when AOD is off?  For my phone, I have seen the lag when AOD is off so I turned on AOD temporarily until the issue is sorted out.  I prefer to leave it off though due to the extra hit on the battery.

The screen waking up already seemed a bit slow before the update and now it'sa good bit worse.  I don't use the Ambient features so I never noticed the flickering or flashing. But I do very much notice the slow screen wake after finger print.

Please fix this!  I know it's not a huge deal but it really does make a difference to how responsive the phone feels.

This has happened to me as well, gutted! My Pixel running Android P beta is much quicker so quite disappointed.  Hope a fix is issued quickly.

Happening with me too since P DP2, rolled back to May 8.1 Oreo and it was snappy again, updated to P DP3 and it's still laggy, takes 1-2 seconds to wake up the display or unlock via FP sensor.
Come-on Google, this was supposed to the fastest Android device out there.. BLOD on Nexus 6P, halos on Pixel 1 camera, display flickering on Pixel 2 XL.. 🤷🏻‍♂️

5. Change the 'Always on' setting from ON to OFF

If Always on is set to on it won't have a delay.

Hasn't been mentioned before and I just realized it today, but of course this also badly affects the response time of opening the camera by double pressing the power button!

I've submitted a fix for the several seconds of wake lag caused by the June update: https://android-review.googlesource.com/c/kernel/msm/+/703008

It turns out that the several seconds of lag stems from the display falsely claiming that it has become unresponsive whenever it is turned on. In order to remedy this, the kernel decides to power cycle the display in order to make it responsive again; however, this process usually takes at least ~3 seconds to complete, during which the display mostly remains black (or it can flash sometimes). The ~3 seconds of lag when turning on the display are caused by the kernel needlessly turning the display off and on again.

In addition, the other patches I've submitted effectively mitigate the intended 50 ms increase in wake lag: https://android-review.googlesource.com/q/topic:%22wahoo-faster-screen-on%22+(status:open%20OR%20status:merged)

With all three of my patches applied, the display takes even less time to turn on than it did before the June update, and the AOD fix is preserved.

I have same problem with proximity sensor Nexus 5x

I have problem with proximity sensor since update to android 8.1. But I am convinced it is a software issue, the screen goes black during phone calls or Whatsapp calls (normal) but does not turn back on after I move it away from my ear. Doing a sensor test seems to confirm this: start test 5 cm put finger 0 cm remove finger 0 cm -> sensor reading stays at 0 cm. Can you please fix it.

Same issue in my Pixel 2XL, some people give a temporary solution by making the ambient screen always on, but it consumes more battery.
That means when the screen is on with notifications or with the clock, it wakes up instantly as before the June update.

Apologies if this adds nothing to the issue, but I just wanted to note that the problem is also seen on Pixel 2 XL when opening a case with a magnet. It takes a second or two for the display to become active when it used to feel instantaneous. It seems particularly bad when the AOD is off (which I think it is if you close a case with a magnet, rather than just letting the device sleep/hitting the power button and then closing the case).

I've only started noticing this. So there could possibly be more to it than just a bug that happened post update. I know my imprint was working perfectly until this morning, roughly 12 hours ago. And suddenly over the last couple of hours it's been very slowly, and it seems to be getting slower, sometimes taking upwards of 2 seconds to wake, with ambient on, and even with the screen on.

I recently purchased the pixel 2 XL for the first time. I started noticing this issue about a week after I purchase the phone. I noticed with the ambient display always on that I'm able to get into my phone quicker. Simply put when the screen is completely off it takes a couple seconds for it to turn back on after you've press the fingerprint scanner. Is a little bit of a nuisance and I really don't want to have my display always on.
