sc...@gmail.com <sc...@gmail.com> #20
Same here, rarely had a time where it didn't work on my pixel 1 or pixel 2, the pixel 3 is NOTICEABLY worse and very very inconsistent. One of the first things I noticed about the phone but it's happened so much that it compelled me to come searching. Almost wish I had a defective phone instead and that this wasn't happening to everyone, watch them somehow call it a "feature" now lol Quite disappointing as this is one of my favorite hardware features of any phone I've ever had. Becoming very frustrating when I have to swipe 3 or 4 times to get the action to work.

Same issue on my Pixel 3, worked flawlessly on OG Pixel. Hope this can addressed by software, otherwise it's a deal breaker for me as I use it all the time .

de...@gmail.com <de...@gmail.com> #34
Same. It's not worth using cause of how often it misses.
ss...@gmail.com <ss...@gmail.com> #35
If I swipe slowly on Pixel 3, with a tip of my finger, it works almost always. However fast swipes like I was used on P1 and P2 are working in less then 50% cases. So try "slowswipe" and report back here.
ab...@gmail.com <ab...@gmail.com> #36
I am suffering from the same issue on my Pixel 3 XL. Not just the swipes, a lot of time, even unlocking takes multiple attempts. Fingerprint sensor is really bad on this one.

just went through this with support, not surprised but they acted like they had no idea what could be wrong + they hadn't heard of any issues. did a factory reset, nothing. getting a replacement shipped. sensor went from working 1 in 2-3 times day 1 to 1 in 6-7 times (if that) 10 days later. so irritated, this is inexcusable for a brand new flagship phone that cost $800+

Got my pixel 3 xl two weeks ago, can tell the major difference from pixel 2 to the 3. fingerpring scanner doesn't even recognize any of my 4 patterns on both my hands. First I thought it's cause the sand paper at work wore my prints down to much but now it seems like a common issue when I look it up. IDK if the issue is the new update or what but it's very annoying that the feature does not work I hope the touch pad on the pixel buds does not go out as fast.
qu...@gmail.com <qu...@gmail.com> #92
Same. Switching from a Pixel 1XL to a Pixel 3XL, there is a notable problem. My new phone often doesn't register a swipe down to bring down the notification shade. Never had a problem on Pixel 1XL. Hope you can fix this as it's a gesture I use constantly.
tr...@gmail.com <tr...@gmail.com> #93
fingerprint reader garbage on new phone now too. seems like it's just a flaw. it's not even just the gesture it's unlocking. if i clean the sensor + make sure my finger is 100% clean + dry it will work maybe 50% of the time, but then 10 min later the sensor needs to be cleaned again even though it's visibly clean. hoping they figure something out or i'm going to have to give up on an otherwise great phone.

Same problem on Pixel 3XL. Have had issue since phone purchased in November. Recognizes my fingerprint about 50% of the time. Have deleted and rescanned fingers multiple times. Set up two scans per index finger so it will recognize from whatever angle. Keeps saying too many attempts and I have to use the pattern to unlock. Often says dirty, but I clean with alcohol wipes for electronic devices to no avail. Very frustrating. Almost not worth using.

I also have the same issue on my Pixel 3XL. The fingerprint sensor is failing well over half the time and in some cases fails so much that I have to revert to the pin to unlock my device.
I've attempted the following to resolve the issue:
- restart device
- factory reset device
- delete and re-add fingerprints
- delete all fingerprints and add multiple fingerprints using the same finger
It was working fine and never failed prior to December. Also, never had this issue on my original Pixel XL even after 2 years it still works perfect. Seems like it must be a software issue or the fingerprint hardware has just suddenly failed.

I find that it sometimes helps if you hold your print on there for a while.
It seems to be a screen lock software problem since it always works when
logging into apps using the fingerprint feature. It just regularly fails to
unlock the phone.

When will they fix this? C'mon Google!! It gets "stuck" in the middle of removing the lock screen and bringing the o/s back up. Sometimes it the just let's me in when I hit the power button after the fingerprint "fails"without requiring my unlock code. So the unlock works but the screen redraw doesn't.

My Pixel 3 XL does not work consistently. Sometimes I am able to get it to learn my fingerprint, sometimes not. I've had the Pixel 3 nearly a year - and the fingerprint sensor is by far the worst I've ever had on a phone. Wiping down the sensor tends to resolve the issue, but I have to do it probably 10-20x more often than I have had to do with any phone I've had in the past...

Just a few weeks old any having the same issue with my Pixel 3XL the finger print sensor does not work. My old Nexus 6p still work flawlessly after all these years. Very disappointing and i am so used to he finger swipe now. I think you guys have made it too sensitive to work in real life.

Same issue. Often receive unable to process finger print or otherwise. Seems somewhat random as it works well half the time and not at all the other half. I have same index finger learned twice as well. Another interesting occurrence is that often when it won't register my fingerprint to unlock the phone, it will work to unlock an app that uses it for my password.

How in the world is this an unaddressed issue? Droves of people have their fingerprint sensor on our supposedly "flagship" phone not working most of the time. Unbelievable and disrespectful.
This is grounds to change to switch to other phone/OS vendors. Don't mind if I do, Google.

Having the same intermittent issue. Phone keeps says its a hardware issue and the haptic part of the finger print sensor won't usually activate. Waking the phone from sleep mode with the power switch helps to activate the sensor some times. Would be nice to hear from Google on a solution before too long.

I know no one is going to read this but I'm going to go ahead and post it anyway:
This issue is for the *SWIPE GESTURE* on the fingerprint sensor (found under Settings > System > Gestures > Swipe fingerprint for notifications). The problem being reported here is that the sensor doesn't always pick up the swipe gesture and requires a particular finger placement or alignment. This is *not* about failures to unlock the phone with the fingerprint sensor. That's a different issue entirely, an issue that may or may not overlap with this one (in my case, unlocking is 100% reliable but swiping is not).
Half the comments on this issue are about people's phones failing to unlock with the fingerprint and these comments are not helping either group.

Same had been happening recently on my pixel 3. If I retrain my imprints, it works for a while, but will then degrade after a short time to where I'm constantly getting the "too many tries" error and have to use the pin. I now always try different parts from my fidget from the start, knowing it's not going to work the first time, but it is very annoying.

I see post #155 and #163. I understand this post is about the swipe issue. Is there a post about the FINGERPRINT UNLOCK issue? I didn't see one when I searched but I am new to Google Issue Tracker.
I recently got a new pixel 3, UNLOCK was working fine until I started the Android 10 upgrade. Now, it works sometimes, but most of the time takes more than 1 attempt, and many many times it takes 4 attempts, and sometimes it goes to "too many attempts" and quits. I have tried several fixes, such as adding the same fingerprint several times, uninstalling recently upgraded apps. Now support wants me to factory reset my phone. No thanks, I'm certain that won't work, since the issue just started with Android 10 upgrade, and the issue still occurs in safe mode.
I found a thread online that discussed the issue being fixed if you downgrade to Android 9, but it seems like your data gets wiped when you do that, also it seems pretty complicated (for me).
Previously had a Pixel 1 for 2 years, never had this issue.
The FINGERPRINT UNLOCK issue is driving me nuts.

jd...@gmail.com <jd...@gmail.com> #174
same on Pixel 3. My wife and i have had our phones since Nov of 2018. Scanner worked great until the update to Android 10 and then they stopped working consistently. Not sure if it was a coincidence or if Android 10 changed something in how the fingerprint is processed. This is super frustrating. Finger and sensor have to be 100% clean and of the right moisture to even have a chance of unlocking the phone. However, it seems to work fine when logging into an app with bio-metrics.
eh...@gmail.com <eh...@gmail.com> #175
My Pixel 3 no longer accepts my fingerprints, nor does it track my finger if I use a pattern. This started 5 or 6 days ago and has gotten progressively worse. A reboot temporarily solves the issue but otherwise after 1 or 2 days it stops working March Update 2020 weirdness?
pe...@gmail.com <pe...@gmail.com> #176
March 2020: I have a pixel 3 and for about 2 months my fingerprint sensor has been intermittently failing to recognize my fingerprint, both for unlocking the phone and for accessing apps. Usually after a restart, it will work for a short time but routinely fails again. Today, I tried something, and it seems to have made a noticeable improvement, or could just be coincidental. I turned OFF all haptics. For the last 8 hours, the sensor has not failed, which is unusual as my sensor has been failing everyday, sometimes multiple times per day. I post this information here, not as a solution, but in the hopes it will help engineers at Google figure out how to fix it.

I have the same problem with Pixel 3 XL. After 2 months, it forgets the fingerprint. I registered. And have to do the registration all over again. Sorry for missing the first request. Here's the bug report:
I did a few swipes with different speeds and pressure and many weren't registered (both up and down). It's a bit strange now because I have learned to do it with a certain speed, positioning, and pressure to get it to work most of the time, but it's still not 100%. With my older Nexus 5X I never had to adjust my swipe gesture for the phone, it worked very consistently.

This is my fourth Pixel 3 and I've had issues with the fingerprint sensor on every device. The fingerprint sensor works with other apps that use the fingerprint to unlock, yet unlocking the actual device fails 9/10. I foolishly replaced this phone three times, assuming it was a hardware issue. Good to know that it's a software issue and I'll be using my password until I can afford a new phone. Fingerprint gesture issues can be frustrating, especially when older models like the Pixel 2 XL handle it better. It seems like a software optimization issue. Hopefully, a future update improves consistency.

Description
I've compared this side by side with a Pixel 2 XL which works consistently every single time, indicating this is a very real problem. I fully believe that this is an issue that affects every Pixel 3 device as I've noticed happening on two different Pixel 3 XL devices and I've seen widespread reports of it happening on Reddit.
