Step 3 of the Firebase assistant tells you to create a new class which extends FirebaseInstanceIdService. However, FirebaseInstanceIdService is deprecated. So it looks like I need to do something else. Now I get to go figure out what. Oh joy. It would be nice if the assistant provided more useful assistance.

Build: 3.2.1, AI-181.5540.7.32.5056338, 201810090144,

Steps: Refer to

https://firebase.google.com/docs/reference/android/com/google/firebase/iid/FirebaseInstanceIdService and the class is marked as deprecated but the connection windows still suggests this usage.
