We're working with the material team to ensure that Navigation matches the new material design guidelines.

Hi everyone. What is the progress or official decision on this one?
wo...@gmail.com <wo...@gmail.com> #4
Hey guys, is there any progress on this issue? Can we expect these features to be implemented in the near future?"
sg...@google.com <sg...@google.com> #5
Any update on this?

We'll update the bug here when there's updates to post. Suffice it to say, there's still work to do and we're dedicated to getting it done."

Hey guys, any update on this?"
se...@springworks.in <se...@springworks.in> #8
The two biggest issues and annoyances of this bug for our end users with the new Navigation library and Bottom navigation bar are:
- Changing tab with the bottom bar resets the state and backstack of the previous tab/fragment, so our users are completely losing their navigation history (this is correctly implemented in Google Photos app)
- Pressing back from the root of one tab shows the initial tab/fragment instead of leaving the app"

I'm also facing this issue. Looking forward to the update.

Facing the same issue here. Any updates?
se...@springworks.in <se...@springworks.in> #13
Could we get any public updates on this? We're a bit left in the dark with all of these hotlists that we cannot access. What does it mean, why is Google not more public with something of such a high important as support libraries? Why is Jetpack not open source as well? I might be going on a rant here which no one is gonna end up reading, but it's frustrating to start using the new libraries provided by Google that are supposed to accelerate development. Yet it's so hugely opinionated by the developers at Google and no feedback is being sought from the people actually using it? Why can't we, the people _actually using it_, be the one working on it as well. Why can't we have an open collaboration like Kubernetes or other Google projects? Could Google start opening up a bit more like Microsoft is doing (not that they're all holy)."

Re #13 - we do read all the comments, rants or not. We'll be updating the bug when there's updates.

Looks like the bug has been turned into a feature:
https://material.io/design/components/bottom-navigation.html#behavior
"Bottom navigation behaves differently on Android and iOS. When you select a bottom navigation item (one that’s not currently selected), each platform displays different outcomes:
On Android: the app navigates to a destination’s top-level screen. Any prior user interactions and temporary screen states are reset, such as scroll position, tab selection, and in-line search.
On iOS: the destination reflects the user’s prior interaction. If the user previously visited that section of the app, they return to the last screen viewed (with its prior state preserved, if possible). Otherwise, the app navigates to the top-level screen.""

rk...@google.com <rk...@google.com> #16
While it's interesting that they've backtracked on the default behavior, because of this:
> Default platform navigation can be overridden when needed to improve the user experience. For example, an Android app that requires frequent switching between sections can preserve each section’s state. Or, an iOS app can return users to the top-level screen (or reset their scroll position) if it better suits the use case.
I think providing an easy option to save each section's state is still worth providing as an option."

We're still dedicated to providing a way to support multiple back stacks.

Such a bad idea whenever user navigate with bottom navigation and its fragment recreated. I also facing this issue.
ja...@reaktor-berlin.com <ja...@reaktor-berlin.com> #19
+1 - this is a major behavior deficiency with androidx navigation, bottom bar is largely unusable in complex apps without support for proper state menagement for each of the tabs, at the same time."
rk...@google.com <rk...@google.com> #20
additionally, fragments should not be getting recreated on back navigation in the same tab/stack - scroll positions in list get lost, fragments that contain maps get reloaded... it makes new navigation framework also questionable for use in relatively complex apps."
be...@jumio.com <be...@jumio.com> #21
I was going to use navigation component in my new application. After trying it on a sample project to see how it handles common navigation problems (or hardships at least for me) such as back stack and state management i truly disappointed. I'm sorry but what was the idea behind to create this library? It doesn't solve anything, it doesn't make any of our current problems easier. It just adds another problem. The way i see it just fancy version of fragment manager."
rk...@google.com <rk...@google.com> #22
can we at least get an update on the progress of implementing the back stacks?
rk...@google.com <rk...@google.com> #23
Is there any update on this issue?
rk...@google.com <rk...@google.com> #24
If there is any progress on this, the developers will update us. For now stop commenting if you don't have any valuable input besides asking "iS tHErE aNy UpDaTE on ThIS?", because if you do this almost 200 people who starred this issue are notified. If you want to show your interest in fixing this issue, just star it. The star button is in the top left corner."

With Navigation 1.0 going to beta01 this morning (https://developer.android.com/jetpack/androidx/releases/navigation#1.0.0-beta01 ), I wanted to provide a detailed update on both the short term and long term plans for this issue.
One very conscious decision we made for Navigation 1.0.0 was to depend on the 28.0.0 Support Library. This means that, out of the box, we are limited to the APIs and behavior contained within. Fragments, the default NavHost+Navigator implementation provided out of the box, does not support multiple back stacks within a single FragmentManager. Even more unfortunately, Fragments do not offer an API for a system built on top of it (such as Navigation) to access the saved instance state and non configuration instance state (i.e., ViewModels) needed to write our own multiple back stack implementation while still using a single FragmentManager.
With that in mind, we'll be doing two things:
1. Short term: provide a public sample that shows our recommended implementation of multiple back stacks with Navigation using the current APIs (i.e., a separate NavHostFragment and navigation graph for each bottom navigation item). This is a top priority for us right now, only superseded by fixing issues blocking the 1.0 release.
2) Medium term: build the correct API on Fragments so that they can properly support multiple simultaneous back stacks, including properly saving and restoring saved instance state and non configuration instance state for all of the Fragments on all of the back stacks. This work is currently in an exploratory stage and, while I'm hopeful, I cannot offer a timeline or promise that this work will succeed.
Immediately following the 1.0 stable release, Navigation will move to depend on AndroidX (similar to how Paging and other Architecture Components switched to AndroidX), allowing us to be in a position to take advantage of the work in #2 to bring multiple back stack support to Navigation in a way that supports both Fragments as well as offers a generic API for other Navigators to provide the same functionality."

Regarding the short term plan: Have you published a public sample of how to implement this yet? If so can you provide a link?

Just stumbled upon this. It looks like the workaround may have just landed in this pull request: https://github.com/googlesamples/android-architecture-components/pull/570 . Check out NavigationExtensions.kt in the NavigationAdvancedSample.
Description
I pretty much cannot build the project if I even just include the Firebase performance library, it fails with the following exception, I have no clue on how to resolve this, because it worked fine with an older Android Studio version(I am not sure which one), I am using the performance plugin 1.2.1 and performance library 17.0.2, which is the latest as of this post
