Portland, Oregon has a popular, trendy and wealthy bicycle commuter class that would like help being eco friendly by biking and bussing. Currently bus planning assumes walkers.

Yes this would be fantastic, also what about a button / mode / option to emphasise walking? Sometimes GoogleMaps will plan a journey with an extra 15 minute bus/train ride to avoid 15 minutes of walking!

Hello! My feature request (https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/148562707) was tagged as a dupe of this one - it would be awesome to have Mixed Mode Travel in the API!

This seems blocked but I can't see by what, is anyone able to comment on when this feature request may get worked on?

Agreed--it would be especially useful to me to be able to get driving + transit travel times.  A large percentage of US commuter rail riders drive to the station to park and ride--not many live within walking distance of train stations and suburban bus services are usually slow and infrequent.  As a result, calculating travel times using walking + transit only will greatly overstate the actual travel times for these kinds of trips.
