In b/162964224 , AndroidX developers are sometimes observing errors that look like this:

$ ./gradlew lint
Execution failed for task ':activity:activity:prepareLintJarForPublish'.
> A failure occurred while executing com.android.build.gradle.internal.tasks.PublishLintJarWorkerRunnable
   > /usr/local/google/workspace/aosp-androidx-git/out/androidx/activity/activity-lint/build/libs/activity-lint-1.2.0-alpha08.jar -> /usr/local/google/workspace/aosp-androidx-git/out/androidx/activity/activity/build/intermediates/lint_publish_jar/global/lint.jar: The destination file already exists.

It seems that triggering this problem requires running two different prepareLintJarForPublish tasks during the same build, but it's unclear what any other prerequisites are.

I've also observed that the problem reproduces deterministically for a given out/ and .gradle/ directory and for example can be triggered to happen or not happen by modifying .gradle/6.5.1/executionHistory/executionHistory.bin

I've attached some debug logs to the linked internal bug ( b/162964224 )
