Steps to reproduce

1. Install AdoptOpenJDK 11 via brew
2. Change JAVA_HOME to JDK 11 path (/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/adoptopenjdk-11.jdk/Contents/Home)
3. Verify Project Structure's JDK Location contains the newest JAVA_HOME JDK 11 variable
4. Re-sync the project

Result: All the files reported errors. Kotlin files show

Cannot access 'android.app.Activity' which is a supertype of '{project class}'. Check your module classpath for missing or conflicting dependencies
Cannot access 'java.lang.Object' which is a supertype of '{project class}'. Check your module classpath for missing or conflicting dependencies

While the build gradle has

Cannot resolve symbol 'Properties'
Cannot resolve symbol 'String'
Cannot resolve symbol 'Exception'
Cannot resolve symbol 'Date'

I then tried going back to JDK 8 (1.8.262), but the problem persisted. I then tried the following ways to resolve the issue

• switching branches
• switching repos (separate git directory)
• re-import gradle project
• clean and rebuild project
• closing/ reopening studios
• invalidate caches/ restart
• deleting .gradle/ .idea/ build folders in the project
• switching “project structure”s JDK (java home to internal jdk)
• uninstalling all versions of jdk to force internal IDE jdk (and update bash profile)
• reinstall previously know to work version of JDK (1.8.626) and update bash profile
• changing the runtime version of Studios, then revert back to the default 1.8.242
• opening "configure SDK" and selecting the current version which JAVA_HOME is using
• restarting the computer 
• removing all preferences related to studios 4.0, uninstalling studios, and installing it again without importing any profiles
• Setting up jEnv and configuring it to properly export JAVA_HOME, later removed jEnv to prevent vector pollution

I am able to compile the project and debug the code all while the IDE is saying the whole project is invalid
