Initially, I thought it was an animation artifact also, until I saw the update notes about the new effect

This is a feature? It's beyond ugly.

This is an issue for me as well. It looks very staticky.

I can't tell if the animation is intended or glitched.

If that's an intended effect, the person who designed that should get fired... For me it's clearly the most annoying bug in Android 12

Initially I thought this was intentional until I saw this, it's a relief, otherwise, 12 is completely ugly just for this.

I reported this as a bug too and got directed here as a duplicate.    It really is ugly and made a pretty bad first impression for me.

We have passed this to the development team and will update this issue with more information as it becomes available.

Try turning animations down to . 5 I have no clue what ripple effect y'all are talking about, so I assume turning down the animation level solved it.

Turning down any of the three animations to 0.5 failed to solve the problem. Likewise, turning off all animations failed to remove the static in the background - it just was visible for less time.

We have passed this to the development team and will update this issue with more information as it becomes available.

Gee, all the hate! I'm sure this was not intended, and would be addressed.

So, I turned my animations back to stock levels and I van now see the animation. It looks fine on the 4XL. May be due to the better processor, GPU or it could be the higher refresh rate.

From the video shared this looks intentional. If you hold down on an area with this effect it continues to "Ripple" very unappealing!

If you insist on keeping it please make it optional and let people opt in from display settings. Don't force others to have a look of a teenage girls' phone.

Ditto what everyone else said. It looks so out of place I assumed it was a rendering issue.

At first I had hoped this was a visual bug, then I unfortunately saw that bit in the demonstration where it was showcased like the new best feature. Just universally assigning this to every app is a very poor choice and will no doubt make users believe something is wrong.

I agree it is not beautiful, and I first thought there was something wrong with the clickable areas, so it felt not good and I would have also reported it as a bug. Please remove this, or foresee an option to switch this off.

Yep, just writing to confirm what others are saying. I also reported this, thinking this was a bug, and that should be reason enough for Google to remove this, or change it drastically. Definitely wouldn't be a good look for release.

Yep, that's definitely not intended. I just tried it out with the Google Search bar on the home screen of the Pixel Launcher. And there you can clearly see that a rectangular shape is used for the glowing ripple effect and that it's not only within the search bar, but also a little outside of it! And I'm using Google App stable in this Beta 1 build.

Just remove the sparkle and maintain the gradient

My opinion after a couple days is that this effect could definitely look good, but i just don't think it's done right. The stars or dots or whatever are too sharp. What's worse though it's that their position doesn't change, even between presses, only the visibility mask applied seems to change. If the stars themselves floated around and the mask had more feather, would look better imo

I'm not sure why the new 'sparkle' animation is such a resolution. It looks very very very bad.

When I joined the beta, I had a 4K live wallpaper on of the stars and after applying everything and returning back to use the phone, I thought these ripple effect was a see-through to my home screen but with bad resolution.

If you tap and hold on a dark image on Reddit or something, the sparkle animation loops over and over. We can see that it's a few images.

Still early days but I really hope this improves. Or at the very least, give us a toggle to switch it off.

I have the same on Google Pixel 4a, generally I like the animation itself of the gradients moving, but sparkle thingy on top just feels weird...

If this really is intentional, it is beyond ugly. I hope this is made customizable or fixed to look like your display is broken. It's even worse with dark theme.

I have to say, the ripple affect is absolutely awful, I use it and it makes me feel like something is just wrong with the animation, I'm sure it can be changed for another ripple affect without the little sparkles.

It is incredibly ugly and needs to be changed before the final release. I can see many people thinking it's a bug when they see it. I like the idea of an effect like this on a button, but the implementation was absolutely terrible here.

Echoing what everyone else here is saying. It looks really cheap and not "modernist" at all. Please fix or allow customisation.

Don't try and fix what ain't broke, and touch animations were not broken at all.

Is this the animation that happens when you click on something and it gets pixelated? Is this a bug, or a new feature???

The notification panel is really glitchy. Also, the date disappeared (next to the time) and you have to pull the panel all the way down, and that's annoying.

While I do not think the animation itself is bad, in fact I do quite like it, there is an actual bug with the size and speed of the animation being incredibly inconsistent.
Sometimes the sparkles are actually pixels and sometimes they're squares of several.
The speed of the animation can sometimes actually increase to ridiculous proportions where it is flashing rapidly.
This seems to be tied to the control the animation is on, as repeated pressings always yield the same result.

What bothers me most about this effect is that the animation is just a looping effect of the the same particles fading in and out. No matter where you see it, the location of each "sparkle" is always the same. If the animation was dynamic, and the sparkles were never in the same place, it would look nicer, but as it is, they are just squares in set locations with a looping fading animation.

This ripple effect worked fine for  me but its not consistent. And this doesn't look good. This needs more refinement. Also we can have water ripple effect rather than sparkles.

It works like transparent gif image placed over buttons..  Not so smooth..

And it has not created random sparkle / pixelate effect. Try to create the effect by code.

I was sure at first this was broken, it's so tacky and hideous. This change to the animation effect should be reverted to the clean ripple.

I have the same problem on my Pixel 3aXL.
This effect does not look nice and should at least have an option to disable it.

The effect is very ugly, please get rid of it.

This was the first issue I noticed after installing the beta. Looked like a glitch or static on my device, and caused concern because I hadn't seen these artifacts in the demo videos I saw before installing the beta. Not surprised to find this is a common issue!

Thanks a ton for the feedback - you'll be seeing continued updates in Beta 2, 3, and onwards to make the ripple more subtle and less distracting/glitch-feeling.

Not sure if my memory serves me right but i feel like I've seen this effect in the beta builds for Android 11 last year as well. It's definitely not the first I've experienced it and i can confirm it's present on my pixel 4xl with this latest 12 build. It did go away for me after the first official public release of 11 last year.

I too was concerned over the ripple effect as well . As with others I too believed at first I may have begun to have an issue with my pixel 4a 5g's screen and thought I may need to replace my device. Highly relieved to know now it's not an issue my device .

Pandora causing Android Auto to freeze when used in conjunction with maps. Not a problem on 11 or with other audio streaming apps used with Android Auto. Just Pandora.

Oh my God I hope this isn't taken away it is the thing I love the most about the beta it just needs improvement on big sized stuff with padding like the items on the discover tab of the Google app where it looks weirdly repeated but other than that it's so godly like the creation, beautiful

Oh dear god, please take that effect away or at least hide under some "active princess mode" button. It doesn't fit the material design concept (which is about simplicity) at all :-(

IT`S NOT AN ISSUE

Beta 3 uses such a nice ripple animation! Keep it like that, Google! It's beautiful!

The effect looks a lot better. I'm not sold on the sparkles still. They look grainy and make me think the display is glitching. It would be interesting to see the same nice animation without sparkles. I think it would be an easy choice in a side-by-side comparison, especially if looking at the application of it on something like connecting to wireless charging.

Please just remove the sparks. If there is a need for extra effects, have it optional.

The bounce effect means that the touch does not go down or up and you have to put an option to deactivate and activate that effect
