It is fixed in android10:
https://android.googlesource.com/platform/external/minijail/+/e926051b48b2a975d82d16e334381c9b6180d273
We also ported the fix back to Pie internally and updated VNDK snapshot v28 in AOSP:
https://android-review.googlesource.com/c/platform/prebuilts/vndk/v28/+/1193689/
Not sure about vndk-27 devices. Are they fully Treblized? Would an update in VNDK snapshot v27 solve the problem?

Thanks for the vndk v28 update, I didn't realize at the time of my entry that pie vendors were impacted as well.
About the vndk 27 devices, yes there are some vndk-27 fully treblized devices with that issue, for instance the Razer Phone (though it received an OTA to Pie).
Updating vndk v27 prebuilt won't fix the issue, because libminijail wasn't in vndk back then: walleye-opm4.171019.021.q1 has vendor/lib64/libminijail_vendor.so
I've also witnessed vndk v28 devices with vendor/lib64/libminijail.so, so updating vndk prebuilts doesn't fix the issue for those. (I can't remember which device it was, I would guess it's a device that upgraded from vndk v27 to vndk v28 thus they kept libminijail_vendor dependency in their makefiles)

Thanks, your solution helped me. I installed dev web tools, but the issue was still there. Afterwards I first uninstalled updates for the regular Android System web view, and then enabled regular Android System web view. As a result, Gmail, and other apps started to work as expected even after
I uninstalled the dev version of Android System web view. Thanks a lot.

This worked for me as well. Uninstalled Webview updates and then enabled.
It seems to have fixed the issue for all the apps that had this problem.
Thank you n
Take care,
Patricia

Yes, I'm not sure if the Dev version was the thing that fixed it. But it was an interesting process to get there.
I installed another mail client (Mail I think) to see if I could workaround the gmail issue. I went to add the Google account, and the app actually said "webview is not installed". Hmm, I thought. So I played around with it and it started working.
It's a shame it took a 3rd party app to be programmed correctly to know what the error was!

Uninstalling webview and then rebooting my phone seemed to solve the
problem for me as well. In addition, other apps and my Google search bar
now work as well.

I saw the comment related to WebView and realized I had been running the beta version of WebView on my Pixel 5, as a fix to an issue I used to have with another app a while back. Left the beta of WebView, and reenabled it, and now I no longer have problems with apps crashing.

Uninstalling Android System WebView and then rebooting my phone fixed several apps that were crashing on load.

I just uninstalled the regular webview which is installed by default.
Then directly reinstalled or activated it and Gmail is working fine now. Gotta test other apps, but this should be the solution.

I was also getting a lot of apps just stopping and crashing when I opened them. Uninstalling and then enabling WebView resolve all those issues for me, as others have also noted.

I'm glad my webview fix is helping people 😁😁 I have a detailed breakdown of the issue and how I solved it:

I had a similar issue. But it was due to a different style I was using. I reverted back to the default style in "Styles and Wallpapers" and it all email clients started working again.

Uninstall and then enable webview fixed AccuWeather & outlook from crashing continuously.
ry...@gmail.com <ry...@gmail.com> #21
Uninstall and reinstall (enable) via Play Store solved the problems for me as well. Interestingly, I noticed that prior to doing this, if I launched Gmail it was not honoring dark mode and would crash about 2 seconds after launching. After reinstalling webview it's in dark mode and works just fine.

uninstall and enable also worked for me. wonderful :D
sy...@gmail.com <sy...@gmail.com> #23
Disable / Enable or Uninstall / Install doesn't work on Pixel 3.
sy...@gmail.com <sy...@gmail.com> #24
Uninstall then install then enable worked. Disregard my previous comment.

Same issue here, Google Pixel 3 XL. Took a while but after a few force stops and uninstalling the updates, my apps no longer crash.

Had the same problem. The webview fix did not work directly but when looking into it I saw webview was associated with my secondary account on my phone. I signed out of my secondary (work) Gmail account and now it works. I'm guessing there's some confusion when it tries to open embedded webviews to a different gmail account to your main one? Thanks anyway
