Thanks for the post!
Geocoding API works best when handling full, unambiguous addresses in the standard format used by the postal service in your country. For much better result, we suggest that you use the complete address for Liverpool, UK. For example:

Hi, this isn't satisfactory, sorry. It doesn't explain why Liverpool suffers in this system. I have developed a website for a client and their customers need to search the UK for specific locations. Every other place in the UK that I've tried works fine, even areas in Liverpool, even places that have the same name as places in the US, Manchester for example. For these there is no need to put, UK, or , GB or something. And since all users of this website will be in the UK they are never going to randomly put, UK after a town name.
It's very strange and it's really annoying and I can't see any fix for it at all. There must be a better explanation as to why this happens just for Liverpool! Please advise. Thanks

Hey James,
I've posted the original issue, I no longer work on the project where we had this problem but I remember that we were able to drastically improve our geocoding by adding the `components=country:GB` parameter to the API request. I am almost sure it also helped with the Liverpool issue.
Hope that I was able to help you in any way. Best,
Jan

Jan, thanks so much. It must be some sort of glitch but by marking restrict geolocation in the wordpress plug in setting, it works.

Hi, we've find out recently the Geocoding request like this:
isn't returning any results. Liverpool is one of the bigger cities in UK so it's pretty unexpected. In Google Maps "Liverpool" is returned correctly.
