I've followed the steps but I have not been able to still reproduce the problem. I would appreciate a minimal example that causes the problem for you. The previews on the side should be limited to a max of 128x128 and I do not seem to be able get a working case where that does not happen.

If you still have this issue, could you please check if you are using Distraction-free mode and if so check that exiting the mode (View->Appearance->Exist Distraction Free mode) fixes the issue for you. If that does not help could you check if changing the IDE theme affects the issue? Thanks!

Is the issue reproducible for you in other files that have less highlighted problems? Is there a particular threshold of highlighted problems that trigger the issue? I'm asking because it is very challenging for us to reproduce the issue and any hint from you regarding what triggers it would be great.
Would you mind showing how the gutter icon looks in case you change Highlight to "Syntax" and restart Android Studio as you mentioned? Thanks!

This is fixed now and should be available in one of the next releases.
For the context:
The problem is HiDPI specific (mostly mac but also windows) for the images that have high ratio between their width and height.

The fix is not in Giraffe. It is available in Hedgehog Canary 11 and later versions.
