Agreed, you can download photos via the Google Drive API but this hasn't been incorporated into the Photos API yet...

There's already an issue tracking the missing EXIF data here: https://issuetracker.google.com/111228390
Regarding the file at original quality - this is something that's on our list and will be addressed soon, please stay tuned. I'll update this bug once we have an update to share.

We have just released a new version of the Google Photos Library API that supports now this feature.
You can now use the "d" base URL parameter to download the original photo. See the base URL parameter guide for more details:https://developers.google.com/photos/library/guides/access-media-items#image-base-urls
Thanks for your patience!

I've been testing downloading images using the "d" parameter, but the files returned are not the original files that were uploaded. The release note above reads "d download parameter, to download the original image". The link to the developer documentation doesn't say that the "original" image will be downloaded. Please can you confirm if the d parameter should download the original image that was uploaded to the api, or if this behavior has since changed.

I've tested this again, and the file download is a mutated version of the file uploaded to Photos. If I use the web browser and go to photos.google.com , when I "Download" a photo it is byte-for-byte identical to the file I uploaded. If I use the API and attempt to get a copy, with the included "d" base URL, the file is mutated. Both some metadata is missing, as well the photo itself is modified (doing a pixel-for-pixel comparison shows subtle differences).

I can confirm this is still broken and using the 'd' parameter does not return the original photo.

This is still an issue

Yes, having the same issue. Oddly, seems to work in any wide angle or zoom shot, just not in default lens mode

Same issue with my pixel 8.
th...@gmail.com <th...@gmail.com> #24
Indeed, auto exposure is bugged on Pixel 8 Pro with its main 1X camera. Tapping on bright or dark objects exposure don't change as it suppose to. This bug seems to be only for 1X, Ultra-Wide and Telephoto lenses works as suppose to.
kb...@gmail.com <kb...@gmail.com> #25
Just checked on Pixel 8 and can confirm that main camera auto exposure with tapping/focus is in fact bugged and not working. While Ultra-Wide auto exposure works as it should.
th...@gmail.com <th...@gmail.com> #26
Same issue on Pixel 8 Pro. Main 1X lens seem to be only affected.
ga...@gmail.com <ga...@gmail.com> #27
This is still an issue on the Pixel 7 Pro!
je...@gmail.com <je...@gmail.com> #28
I'm in the same boat taping to focus and auto adjusting exposure not working all the time in 1x lens.
di...@gmail.com <di...@gmail.com> #29
Same issue. Seems to spread to the 2X zoom as well. .5 and 5x would adjust exposure accordingly. 1x and 2x does not.
th...@gmail.com <th...@gmail.com> #30
Still not fixed on the newest Pixel Camera version.
Also, just recently noticed that Exposure locking for video does not work either with Pixel 8 Pro. Tapping and holding the Exposure lock indication shows up, but it does not lock the exposure. It only locks the exposure, when locking and then also changing the exposure. Do not know if it is a new change or a bug, but on Pixel 7 Pro there was no need to change the exposure for it to lock the exposure itself.

Just tested it again today, and it seem that after recent update this issue spread to 2X also. Ultra-wide 0.5X and Periscope 5X ranges seem to be working fine with auto exposure, but exactly at 1X and now 2X it does not work, while at 0.9X or 1.1X and 1.9X or 2.1X it works.
bx...@gmail.com <bx...@gmail.com> #32
Same here with my pixel 8 pro. On top of that it seems the auto focus doesn't work well if I push the 5x past 8.5x, and it systematically under exposes subjects in the shadows. Frustrating.
ka...@gmail.com <ka...@gmail.com> #33
Pixel 8 Pro and it's been going on since a few days after I upgraded from iPhone... Will force quit, and gives a glitch during videos. Super frustrating.
