Oh and by the way, where is the undo feature in the android feature request system? Just found, after some more extended searching, another issue (6458) which marked the lack of undo functionality as a defect instead of a feature request.
ed...@gmail.com <ed...@gmail.com> #3
Just lost a ton of work trying to navigate a whole email with the two lines of text you get to see. No undo to fix it. Shameful to be missing such an integral feature that has been in computers for a long time now.
da...@gmail.com <da...@gmail.com> #4
Yes, please! Especially since Alt+Backspace will delete an entire line or paragraph, which I sometimes do on accident.
sa...@gmail.com <sa...@gmail.com> #5
Please get undo option into the OS.
im...@gmail.com <im...@gmail.com> #6
IMHO THE major downside of Android is text editing- I thought it couldn't be much of an issue on my Desire Z until I found out... Get us an UNDO function! PLZZZ!!
ev...@gmail.com <ev...@gmail.com> #7
Yes please... even my many Sidekicks had an undo (menu key +z). It's pretty unbelievable that the G2 and other prosumer Android phones don't have this feature.
ek...@gmail.com <ek...@gmail.com> #8
The undo function is absolute necessity. Please add it. I'm on HTC desire HD. Also realized this feature is not available on Android. It's a huge flaw in Android without it.
da...@gmail.com <da...@gmail.com> #9
Nothing more annoying than mangling good text by accident and trying to fix it up on an android phone. Sooo painful. Thanks.
la...@gmail.com <la...@gmail.com> #10
Undo is a basic requirement of any good modern OS.
et...@gmail.com <et...@gmail.com> #11
Not only within apps: I've also been bitten while trying to add a comment to a blog, accidentally hit some button that took me away from that page, and no way to get back to my part-entered comment. Lesson for now: don't use Android device for that kind of activity, go find a proper computer.
Generally, I think that as a read-only device, it works well. But as a data entry/capture device, there's a l-o-n-g way to go.
(Galaxy Tab, Android 2.2, using mNote linked to SimpleNote, and Dolphin browser.)

This is critical if the Honeycomb tablets will ever be able to compete with the iPad for business use. I have become leery of using my tablet for text entry for lack of this feature.
jo...@gmail.com <jo...@gmail.com> #14
I am honestly amazed this feature is not implimented yet. For me this is the only blight on
a near perfect os, and quite a major oversight.
a near perfect os, and quite a major oversight.
co...@gmail.com <co...@gmail.com> #15
This seems to be the most obviously overlooked but useful feature on the platform. The problem is even more pronounced on honeycomb since post people are trying to use their tablets as a laptop replacements but without undo that becomes a very tricky proposition. Google please put this feature into the os so all exixsting apps can get it for free.
du...@gmail.com <du...@gmail.com> #16
This is a feature of such high necessity, I couldn't even call it a feature. It's a function that just NEEDS to be in any OS.
re...@gmail.com <re...@gmail.com> #17
This really inexplicable omission is made absolutely infuriating by the behavior of a physical keyabord that will cause the OS to frequently delete entire lines of typed text at a time. While there is an explainable cause for the deletions, it's SO easy to have happen due to the poor implementation of the Fn key functionality.
kh...@gmail.com <kh...@gmail.com> #18
. . Comming from an Touch Pro 2 (Windows Mobile with full qwerty, modifier keys and arrows keys) I find this lack of "ctrl+c", "ctrl+v", "ctrl+x" and "ctrl+z" (or command, if you're into mac) disgusting. Also, most of the screens doesn't have a "cancel" button. Say you started to edit a field and changed your mind about the changes. There is no way of canceling the changes and getting the original value back into the input.
. . The lack of these features is outrageous.

an...@gmail.com <an...@gmail.com> #26

ti...@gmail.com <ti...@gmail.com> #27
Update: just tested on Motorola Xoom 3.0, and still there's no sight of Undo. Maybe the Google employers just find it unnecessary. Absurd.

fr...@gmail.com <fr...@gmail.com> #32
I "upgraded" to the Sidekick 4G from an earlier Sidekick and just figured I couldn't find the "undo" feature. Finally came online to find help. It never occurred to me that it might be absent. Goodness gracious. Especially with the lack of arrow keys and over-sensitive touch screen. The latter wouldn't be so noticeable and aggravating if a quick "Menu + Z" or something would undo the last one or two actions. I am used to using my sidekick for all kinds of things, but this one has me running for my laptop (a much heavier alternative!) for anything remotely important.
jo...@gmail.com <jo...@gmail.com> #33

I'd like to add to this, as to me this is an essential function.
bi...@gmail.com <bi...@gmail.com> #39
Lack of undo is - aside from the countless moot clicks that end up doing nothing but changing focus to where I actually meant them to do something real (like adjusting the text cursor) - the main reason I consider my purchase of an android device a mistake.

bi...@gmail.com <bi...@gmail.com> #44
This is outrageous. Especially considering how poor the copy and paste is.
I was trying to select some text in a huge forum post I had written and I couldn't select what I wanted, the markers kept moving around all over the place. Eventually the whole piece of text I had selected got dragged into another section of the text and there was not way to undo. I had to scrap it and re-write a huge section of the post. Please add this basic feature ASAP. I hate to say it but Apple has a huge win in this area, the undo on my iPhone 4 works beautifully.

I would have no hesitation, from a developer's point of view, marking this enhancement as HIGH PRIORITY, but i'm not employed at google, and it seems they are too much busy on UI whistles to really take care of text editing usability, that is utterly bad implemented so far.
The bare minimum would be (1) Undo feature Ctrl+Z, (2) cursor support on virtual keypad, (3) common shortcuts for easy text navigation, like CTRL+ARROWS for move word by word, (4) Cut & Paste with hotkeys Ctrl+c/v .. Tablets ARE NOT PHONES, and many of them can take advantage of a phisical keyboard!

No, unfortunately it does not. There is not currently a global undo/redo function that it could call upon, there are only per-app functions that developers have added to their apps.

Google developers simply belive that android users are all so smart that they really never make mistakes. Or at least, only type-mistake free users will still continue to use their product, as a darwin selection law. Please all of you star this isue, it really need to be addressed in ice-cream 4.0 at least!
ro...@gmail.com <ro...@gmail.com> #73
Um, I may be wrong here, but it's my understanding that Android-- being open-source-- is (mostly, probably entirely) NOT Google's intellectual property, and thus it rests with the open-source development community for Android enhancements. Yes, Google developers do play a part, but it has never been Google's -=responsibility=- to do anything for Android. They just help the project along where they can, so I believe while it is valid to ask "Google, please work on this", I don't believe it's valid to assign *blame* to Google for missing functionality enhancements... That blame is simply misplaced, as the Android bugs that get worked on are (theoretically) the ones with the most stars. So you are correct about it needing more stars. After that, try to convince your software developer friends to work on it...
gr...@gmail.com <gr...@gmail.com> #74
It is indeed "open source" but keep in mind that the development process is not! Source code is generally released only AFTER a release version is completed, compiled and shipped. Therefore we can make lots of custom roms afterward, but not really modify the official release that is branded "Android" by Google.
You can contribute of course, but it is controlled by Google. From thesource.android.com FAQ: "There are some limits on the kinds of code contributions we are willing or able to accept. For instance, someone might want to contribute an alternative application API, such as a full C++-based environment. We would decline that contribution"
Since each app developer uses his own text input thingy I guess it would mean a quite significant API rewrite to make all text input route through an undo-capable API. It might even require app developers to slightly modify their apps to support the new undo API. I'd have to study the Android internal workings more to be shure though.
Back to the point: Google is not responsible for actually writing the code for undo, but they DO have the responsibility to actually put it in the release. Above all though I think it's a problem with complexity: each app handle text different. There exists no easy fix.

I'm unfortunately not skilled enough to give any contribution to android development, being too much biased developing for micro$oft platforms, but from a technical point of view i do not really believe that implementing an undo for common textbox inputs whould require any API redesign, as far as the undo buffer can be controlled using hotkeys, like Ctrl+Z, the same way as copy&paste does. Aftherall, a simple 1-slot undo buffer instead of a full blown undo implementation would represent a GIANT step forward anyway, compared to nothing at all. Can't see any complexity issues there, but i do not have the skill to verify. Anyone of you does ?

I initially thought I was crazy and because I couldnt figure out how to undo something on Android. I assumed it was my noob-ness (got a Galaxy Nexus after only ever having iPhones). Im shocked that the undo feature has never existed on Android and *still* doesnt exist in ICS. Until I found this thread, I was really enjoying the switch. Now I feel like Im never going to be truky satisfied with my decision intil this problem is addressed. You listening Google? Helloooooooo??? Anybody out there???? I think google guys will prioritize undo development into base infrastructure only when they realize that android is no longer limited to phones, but will gain market share on tablets and touch netbooks. In my humble opinion undo support is critical for serious editing, can you imagine a word suite without undo ? It's something you would like to thow out of the window after the first mistake, with the tablet follows as well. Is ICS targetted for tablet ? So it MUST have undo support, period.

As a new Android user, lack of undo function is biggest disappointment so far.
Description
I'd like a feature where anywhere I see a phone number it is automatically
linked to the dialer. So I can just click on the phone number and it will
automatically be dialed. I used this feature on my old palm treo
extensively. I find the lack of this feature makes using the Droid phone
far more tedious. I had someone text me a phone number and discovered that
to dial the number I actually had to write it on a separate sheet of paper
and then go to the dialer and type it in. This was extremely frustrating
esp after years with my palm where I'd just click the number to dial it.
