Add functions to encode serializable objects to and decode serializable objects from SavedState
.
Expand for full commit details
Add functions to encode serializable objects to and decode serializable objects from `SavedState`.
We do this by implementing an `Encoder` and a `Decoder` that writes and reads a `SavedState` output format for Kotlin Serialization (https://github.com/Kotlin/kotlinx.serialization). The format represents a Kotlin Serialization "primitive" as their corresponding `SavedState` supported type, and represents a "composite" in a `SavedState` with its property names as keys. Nested composites are represented by nested `SavedState`s.
Here are some other design choices we made:
1. We don't record size for collections and rely on the size of the `SavedState` in decoding so that collections and non-collections are treated the same.
2. To save space, we don't encode default values by default (it can be tweaked with `@EncodeDefault` with plugin-generated serializers).
3. To support nullable parameters with default arguments (e.g. `val a: String? = "foo"`) and for `SavedState` size to be correct for collections, we encode `null`s.
4. To keep things simple we don't support specifying custom `SerializersModule`s for now.
Please note that when using Kotlin Serialization and these functions as a `Parcelable` alternative on Android there's a performance overhead because of the extra serialization needed.
Also note that on Android we don't have built-in support for Android or Java specific types supported by `Bundle` or `Parcel` yet (e.g. `Exception`, `java.io.Serializable`, or `IBinder`). We may consider adding these types in the future.
Relnote: Add encodeToSavedState() and decodeFromSavedState() functions

I think that ordinary users (not developers) don't know and/or don't have knowledge to install custom firmwares, nor root their phones.
Not sure if installing a custom firmware is a real solution for this issue.

things that iPhone can do and nexus can not do. Why not, is the hardware
incapable or is it a security risk ?

As soon as I added the number to my SIM the SMS app changed my avatar photo.
I'm surprised that everybody speeks of Iphones though. I have my Nexus One with stock 2.3.3 and it's also not possible to edit or change the number yet.
If CyanogenMod 6.x and 7 can modify it, then it most be an added option developed for this ROM. Developers, please add this option to Stock or create an app for this.
Thanks

Furthermore it is a standard sim toolkit function, making me believe that not upporting this makes Android non-standard-conformant. Which is sad. (But hey, they haven't even bothered to make Android devices HID-compliant yet, I guess (open) standards don't mean that much to them.)

This issue is raised more than a year back and there is no one at Google looking into this issue? Though I like Android for being *open*, these things(this issue, Android certificate issues, exchange email sub folder sync, allowing support for third party VPNs..etc ) and Google's laziness in making Android a 'mature platform' pisses me of at times.
How about adding 'Beta' tag to Android like the usual Google products does for a long time?
As long as I need a secondary phone for doing simple things, how would I call Android a 'mature smart phone OS'?

This is my first Android phone. I switched from Iphone and I have only been disappointed since, this issue is just the top!
Nothing runs smooth - it just seems to be "bug on bug" on Android.. I guess I´ll be switching back to Iphone as soon as the new model comes out.

Btw, I could add my phone number by using my very old Siemens ME45. Access Contacts and then Own Numbers. Some SIMs have 2 or 3 items available. I filled the first one.
I tried also a Siemens S25 and a Nokia 6233 but I was not able to find a similar feature.
A list of other phones that allow to modify this information can be find here

calling T-Mobile and explained that I needed my number saved to my sim
because it causes some issues otherwise. Verified I own the phone and can
make the changes. Was transferred to the Android department. They saw I was
verified, sent the changes over the air. Told me to reboot. Done.
It was their fault, they can fix it.

Google is the strangest company ever. When they do something they do it great, but when they don't do something they put so much effort into not doing it that it never gets done. If this was my policy I would still be in bed.

There is one app in Market that claims to do this called "My Phone Number" by Lytsing. But it is for rooted devices only, and even then may not work on all devices.
Please, everyone commenting on this issue, please vote up this "bug"

Go into Contacts -> [Menu] -> More -> Settings -> Own numbers -> [Menu] -> Create and type your phone number into the Number field, now Save.
Then switch your phone off and on again, and it should show the correct number (or whatever number you entered) in the status now.
This works in my Froyo OS.

For me, I have Samsung Galaxy s5670.
the problem is: if you go to setting -> about -> status -> my phone number: it will says "Unknown".
To edit your phone number or to create new one do as follows:
A- If you already created one and you want to edit it then go to [contacts -> option -> my profile -> option -> edit] now you can change your number, add picture or change your picture.
B- If you got "Unknown" issue as mentioned before that's mean you didn't set your number before and to do that go to [contacts -> option -> my profile] create new one and add your number, picture etc.
To make sure go to setting -> about -> status -> my phone number: it will says "What ever number you typed".
Good Luck

However, it seems that for Gingerbread and Froyo, the only way to solve this is via SIM writing, that can only be done with an older phone or an iphone.

Description
Number" on the SIM card to link your picture to your contact in the contact
list.
By default, SIM cards issued by many phone operators don't include that
data.
For adding it, you need a phone capable of writing it on the SIM card.
iPhone allows to do that with the following menu :
* Settings > Phone > My Number
Without this feature, android user can not fix the grey rectangle they have
for avatar in the messaging app.
