Does not seem to impact all TVs the same way. Was ok on my Philips and LG, but horrible on an older plasma Toshiba. Though this was a problem with the TV until I realized that this is an overlay applied after a few seconds.
Please give us the option to (1) disable the overlay and (2) adjust its intensity depending on the screen or our needs.

This is one of those needling issues that drives people to adopt different software. I really just want to use Chromecast as a picture frame 90% of the time, but not with some third party app.

Please make this an option, the gradient ruins some of our photos.
ta...@gmail.com <ta...@gmail.com> #14
Why doesn't Google give a credible reason why they don't want to fix this problem. It shouldn't be a problem to do that. It's making backdrop totally useless.
rs...@gmail.com <rs...@gmail.com> #15
As something with a VERY high priority (P1) and a high severity (S2), why is it taking so long to correct?
is...@google.com <is...@google.com> #16
I just bought an ultra and the first thing I noticed is the picture quality on the Backdrop pictures. Completely disappointed. Spent a few hours on the internet to discover that there is no way that the gradient can be removed. I'm surprised why it can't be a simple plain display of the picture as is. Please do the following
1. No zooming of the picture
2. No adjustments to the picture to "fit screen"
3. No dark gradient on the background
4. Also, a nice to have, please allow us to change/adjust the display time of each picture. Currently, there is only 0.5x,1x and 2x options, it makes much better sense if we can adjust the time in seconds. Have 5-second option to begin with and then increase by 5 seconds intervals for the next.
Please just let us turn off all the "fancy" features and be able to display the pictures as is

I'd love to see an option to display backdrop photos unmolested as well. I take great care to expose properly, edit, etc. and love to use my Chromecast with a Google Photos album to randomly display my favorite photos on my TV when I'm not casting media from a device. What will it take to get this 'feature' (I have a hard time calling it that) incorporated?
is...@google.com <is...@google.com> #18
This is a major annoyance for a lot of users, surely you could implement an option to remove the overlay gradient. Ive had a Chromecast for a long time now, and have just recently purchased an Ultra and was disappointed that this was the same behaviour on my new device. Please fix this Google Devs

This is fixed in internal firmware releases and fix will be available to public in next chromecast firmware release.
Steps to remove dark gradient over backdrop photos:
1. Google Home app -> Device -> Backdrop Settings -> Google Photos -> enable Google Photos for Backdrop -> Add Album
2. Google Home app -> Device -> Backdrop Settings -> Turn off all the information like Time, Device Info, etc

As mentioned in posts above, the version available to the general public only has options to turn off the extra information.
There is no option to turn off the dark gradient.
Worse, the dark gradient now appears on portrait photos, whereas before, portrait photos did not have the dark gradient.
Obviously there must be some complications in implementing this option. A shame, because such a simple change would be a killer feature of the chromecast.
As it is, I am constantly looking for alternatives. I'll even switch away from a google ecosystem if I could find a satisfactory solution.

Sorry I'm not sure what to do here.
Are you saying that the request to "remove the dark gradient" needs more explanation?
My understanding from comment #21 is that there is a fix that has not been released to the public yet.
Since that comment there has been an update pushed out to the public that renames "backdrop" to "ambiance" and allows us to selectively remove additional information like photo credits, weather info, etc.
However, there is still no option to remove the dark gradient displayed over the photos.
So has the "option to remove dark gradient" still to be released to the public? Or has there been a misunderstanding about what this feature request has been asking for?

You are right! On the latest version you can remove all overlay text like time, weather, personal photo data in the ambient mode.
Regarding the option to remove the dark gradient, I’m still trying to get more information on that and will update soon with my findings.

The gradient will show if Device data is turned on.
can you try to hide device data in ambient settings and cast the photos?
Also if you can share the sample photo you are testing, it 'll be helpful to investigate better regarding the dark gradient.

The dark gradient shows in ambient mode even with all info te off. Any idea if this is another update that we are still waiting for?
ta...@gmail.com <ta...@gmail.com> #39
I made two photos with my smartphone:
1. Photo set as backdrop photo, all ambient information are turned off. Look especially on the lower part which is always darkened (nowadays on portrait and landscape).
2. Photo when casted from Google Photos app. This is how the image is supposed to look like on backdrop without this gradient which darkens photos in the lower part.
Attached is also the original test image from Wikimedia Commons.
I hope this will be fixed soon. Just one of many example recently: Children's face is not visible because it is in the lower part of the photo and too dark thanks to Chromecast Backdrop gradient :(

As reporter of this bug, I want to also say that this is still not fixed.
Thank you to the reporter in comment #39 for posting the example photos.
When you reboot a chromecast there is a brief moment at the start where a stock google photo is displayed without the dark gradient. Then the dark gradient appears over that picture, then the chromecast switches to the users photos (with the dark gradient). The is probably the most obvious place to see the gradient and has been there since the beginning in all versions of the chromecast.

Also suffering from the same issue. Even though all the device data is turned off there is a dark gradient on the background photo which makes it completely useless... Please do something about it!
[Deleted User] <[Deleted User]> #46
I am finding it very hard to believe the Google support team cannot see this problem themselves it's so obvious. Maybe their devices are using an updated firmware and don't usually use the ambient setting at all. Whatever the reason ambient is useless without allowing the lower gradient change in brightness to be set. I can see this is not going to be fixed and so will look for a new device.
[Deleted User] <[Deleted User]> #47
After investigating a bit more, it looks like this dark gradient issue may occur on devices with older UI layout.
Also this issue is not reproducible using devices with latest android version in US.

So if I understand comment #47 correctly, there is an update coming that fixes this?
Would it be possible to get version numbers for when this is fixed?
When does the "older UI layout" get updated?
Strange also that other countries are so far behind the US versions. I was not aware of that.

Having a Chromecast Ultra running version 1.36.140318 of cast firmware with all information turned off, it still has the fade to dark overlay on background images. The overlay is also displayed on the curated albums as well, covering almost two-thirds of the display area with a dark overlay, rendering most images quite dark.
Bit curious if this has any kind of timeline for when this will be fixed and when the fix might make it's way to non-US devices.

[Deleted User] <[Deleted User]> #51
I can't believe they can't fix such a stupid thing like that... like removing that HORRIBLE DARK GRADIENT from the ambient mode... it makes NO SENSE you put it in, but is wrost you can't remove it ... community is asking for this since 2 years.
[Deleted User] <[Deleted User]> #52
They lowered the priority for this issue from P1 to P2. Seems that they do not care for users outside us? See the comment from 26.11.2018, it stated that the problem is not existing in the us version and the priority of the issue was lowered from the user with that comment. I dont think it will be fixed ever. Dont buy google chromecast if you want to watch photos on it, it is simply not working without dark shade at the bottom and that since 2 years. There are other alternatives like the amazon fire stick, i am sure they are able to display the google photos album (very simple job) without such unbelievable issues.
is...@shabtay.com <is...@shabtay.com> #53
Can you, at least, give us the details of HOW the gradient is applied ? (Like "Lowest X% of the screen, from Y% grey to Z%"
That way we can add an inverted filter to our pictures in order to correct the display.

It is absolutely absurd that such a simple fix as being able to toggle the overlay on or off has not ben added in the three years people have been complaining about this.
Like everyone else, no matter whether I turn off all the information to be displayed or not, I can not get rid of the dark overlay in ambient mode. I purchased my Chromecast in Canada just a couple of days ago, if that's different than the US version.

Another point is that I don't think turning off all information is a good way to resolve this issue. Can't we just have an option to turn the dark gradient on/off?
Call it "enhance information text visibility" or something.

We want the options to: (1) disable the "vingette feature,"
I have my Chromecast "backdrop" set to use a my own hand-picked album of family photos (in my Google Photos account). Basically, when the TV has the Chromecast as the selected input, but nothing is playing on Chormecast, I want my TV to just be a huge "digital picture frame" -- without Google screwing with my photos. I've seen a zillion people request this from almost 3 years. Is it really that difficult to turn it off?

I own a Chromecast 2nd gen and also a 3rd gen, and live in New Zealand. Still waiting on this option to be able to remove the scrim/gradient.
Can someone please confirm this fix is a) actually being progressed on, or if we're simply being ignored, and b) what this new UI layout is? How does it compare to the "old" one?

Seems a bit ridiculous to wait 2 years for this request to be an option for users, or even a developer setting, or at the very least an explanation why this isn't going to be developed and have this request closed.

This great to hear, and this is how it used to be earlier, BUT I would still MUCH prefer having the ability to show text (with individual text shadow) selectively without a huge gradient. This is how it should have been to begin with.

Same here (Belgium, version 141427) : the dark gradient is only removed if Time, Weather AND Device Information is hidden.
The most stupid part is that the Device Information had now been moved to the upper right corner and is not even "protected" by the gradient.
In short : this is a bad fix and not an acceptable solution to a very simple problem.

"Works" for me as well now in Australia.
As mentioned in above comments, you have to turn off ALL text information, not just Device Information.
Also noticed that the gradient seems slightly lighter. However the pictures still look far better without it
The better fix, as originally requested, would be to give us an option to turn the gradient on/off and let us decide if the text information needs "protection".
However, we now at least have the ability to display the pictures with full brightness, and for that I thank you.

It is more or less ok now .. even with information, the information was greatly minimized (quite small and neat on a large TV) and the gradient, while still there, is also quite reduced. While still not as good as having a text shadow only by a mile it is at least a visible improvement. I still don't understand why the gradient was chosen at all, I still think it is quite disrespectful of the amount of time and workmanship that went into making high quality photos to begin with. Sadly switching the info off is not an option for me, we have guests over and it is very helpful for them , and us sometimes, to quickly see when and where the photos were taken .
[Deleted User] <[Deleted User]> #79
Update: have the "new" UI with Google sans font. Text looks great and has a subtle drop shadow, and the scrim/gradient disappears when all info is disabled. However, this is limited to the user's Google photos library only and persists with Google curated art gallery, which is my default.
Can we please simply have consistency on this and more importantly an option to remove this gradient?

It's infuriating to me that Google won't do this for us. We could have our big beautiful TVs act as always-changing artwork displays, and they clearly recognize the value in this, but then they go and completely ruin it with the dark gradient. It's literally less visually appealing than a blank screen.

If Google's intention is to prevent users from choosing settings that could result in a negative experience (electing to remove the scrim but not all info, possibly resulting in illegible text onscreen), then I understand that motivation. It's not exactly the Google or Android way (sounds pretty Apple-ish to me) but it's understandable.
What's not understandable is why, after all this time and user feedback, there is not a unilateral solution to this problem. Even with new devices on up to date software, users are continuing to have a poor experience due to this blatant flaw in product design. Beyond the statement of the problem being fixed even though it's not, 1) the removal of all info should not be required in order for the clearly desired and reasonable customization to be made, 2) the use of Google Photos for ambient backdrop should not be required for this to work--that's not even the default option, come on Google, 3) there are further issues in the ambient settings which make this "solution" seemingly impossible: for example, when selecting photo data to not display, it only occasionally works properly (by not displaying).
Is there something else we can do to help you, Google? Or is this just part of a ploy to push users to your upcoming new smart TV solution? I would hate to find out that you're pulling an Apple move on us.

Please provide an option to remove JUST the gradient. Or better yet, just get rid of it altogether. It doesn't make anything look better. Thank you!

I've just updated to the new Chromecast with Google TV and the ambient mode is much better!
The dark gradient is gone (or at least so subtle it dosen't bother me).
The text also contains location information which is a nice touch.
Finally! I had pretty much given up.
I only updated from a chromecast Ultra becasue I noticed the change in ambient mode on someone else's chromecast.
So don't think older Chromcasts have got this new ambient mode?
Technically there is no "Option to remove dark gradient over backdrop photos".
With the lastest device, it's just gone! Which is even better :-)

Sadly chromecast cannot be told to just show photos from all new albums created on google photos and the delectable list is weirdly size limited and no longer shows any of my more recent albums . I guess there is a query limit and no one ever bothered to actually use this feature or think of this limitation. Nowadays chromecast only shows pictures from before corona :(

4.2.2 -> Notifications don't come in after a while when phone is on deep-sleep.
According tohttp://www.xda-developers.com/android/receive-notifications-more-quickly-thanks-to-push-notifications-fixer/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+xda-developers%2FShsH+%28xda-developers%29 , seems like "heartbeat" is set too long, so the connection on port 4223 is automatically closed due to too many idle time and push server can't "hear" the phone heartbeat so it thinks phone is not listening. As a result: No push notifications. When screen is on again, a reconnection is called.
It's waaaay easy for Google to fix it, simply set a shorter value for heartbeat (i.e. 5-7 minutes) so the connection will not close due to idleness. It can be made automatically, as this value is automatically downloaded (and set) by the phone every 12 hours. An OTA update is even not needed!
Please Google FIX IT !!!!

I'm frustrated with this. Tried a lot of things to fix this, but i can't. Every possible fix i do...after a couple of minutes becomes a placebo.
If you want to try if you have this issue i suggest using my method:
1) Open a friendly (but not primary) Gmail account on a "PC/Desktop/Laptop Browser".www.gmail.com
2) Lock your Nexus 4. (Important: Don't use any charger/dock, just use your N4 battery).
3) Open a chat window and send a message to you primary (Nexus 4) account ---> You probably receive the message ASAP.
4) Count to 10 and send another message... ---> You probably (again) receive the message.
5) Count to 40 seconds....and try it again.
6) Now you can also try pushing the button "Start Voice Call" and see what happens..
7) If nothing is happening...just press LOCK button and you instantly receive all the messages and maybe the "ongoing call" too.
Same happens with Viber, Whatsapp, etc.

Tried to replicate the issue with the old Samsung GT-i9000 (Samsung Galaxy S1) using CyanogenMod 10.1 (Android version 4.2.2)...but i couldn't.
It receives messages and voip calls ASAP when screen is off (and disconnected from charger). (Even after....30 minutes of sleep/screenOFF the reception is instantaneous)
So i think it's a Nexus 4 issue.

#139 - It is specifically a Qualcomm Prima WLAN issue. This also appears to affect the Xperia T (another Prima WLAN device).
ARP offload is currently broken on prima wifi chipsets. If you enable it by changing hostArpOffload to 1 in the cfg file:
1) ARP responses when offload is active have the wrong MAC address on mako - it appears to be an endian-swapped version. e.g. if your MAC is AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF, the responses will be DD:CC:BB:AA:FF:EE
2) On Xperia T, you will still not get ARP responses. (I am going to try updating the firmware blob this weekend to see if the firmware from the latest Jellybean release is different...) - This is in CM10 with Qualcomm's opensource prima, I'll also try with a Sony stock kernel to determine if this is kernel-side or blob-side - at least from looking at the kernel source so far, this is a blob-side issue.
This is not an issue with devices that use Broadcom bcmdhd (such as I9000) - bcmdhd has had working ARP offload for a very long time.

My hypothesis is that there are 2 main problems here (both related with DEEP SLEEP):
1) A WiFi driver problem. Which affects receptions of notifications during WiFi + Deep Sleep.
2) A Google's push service issue because of the current configuration. Which can be fixed (probably) with "Push Notification Fixer" (Play Store app). This problem may affect both Wifi and 3G. (And maybe...internet stability could be a one of the ingredients of this problem).
Some people are confusing (including myself) the problem 1 with the problem 2. The problem 1 is the more aligned with this topic/issue.

@139, Google acknowledged that the Qualcomm wifi driver was the cause of the Nexus 4 ARP offload suspend wifi issue on January 14, and people have been complaining about it since November 20. A fixed Qualcomm driver was not included in the 4.2.2 update for the Nexus 4; do you have any idea what is taking so long to get this done?

For whatever reason, Google has been incapable of fixing this problem, and they certainly do not show any concern over it. I've decided to move my Nexus 4 over to CynaogneMod, where they at least have a viable, working bug reporting system and a developer team that is hard-working and who provides feedback to their users. It's not for everyone, because it entails unlocking your phone, rooting it, and flashing a new OS onto it. But as I said, the CM folks at least have a viable bug tracking system.
I've written about it here, check it out:http://things-linux.blogspot.com/2013/03/cyanogenmod.html

Intrestingly though is that if I keep pinging my phone and turn of the screen after I started the ping its just working fine.
If I stop the ping and wait for ~20 seconds again the phone wont respond again. Only after I wake it up again.

Hi,
Nexus 4, rev11 manufactured February in Korea, Factory stock 4.2.2
Setup the Wifi, some options of the terminal meanwhile the new microSIM arrives.
Once then installed the mSIM, configured the APN and through Bluetooth transferred the contacts by Vcard file.
Only left active WiFi (at home) and mobile radios; Bluetooth and NFC off.
Installed only DeadPixelTest (from PlayStore) and Whattsapp (manufacturer redirected to PlayStore) and the automatic downloads the system done.
No problems detected until I decided to activate the NFC to see the menu options it gives. Since then the Whattsapp notifications stopped passed a short period of time from entering iddle (screen off) of some minutes (the time we use to test) in WiFi; before this all ok. Push the on button and notifications begins to enter suddenly, once or two times it took a little more, blue to grey and then blue again radios icons occured but not always.
WiFi neves sleeps. Tried to disable NFC and BT, enabling and disabling in reverse order, other combinations, options, extract the mSIM, etc.
Tried a complete wipe and restore to factory through the recovery console. Reconfigured all trying to follow as much as we could remember the initial setup process without success.
The problem has come to stay it seems.
Until now it seems that there insn't mobile data signal drop (still doing some tests).
Don't want to use the WiFi app to avoid battery drain. If at the begining it worked it could do it again I think. The Wifi uses WPA2-PSK (AES) with a strong password, SSID hidden and MAC filtering in a Comtrend CT-5361 router (but it wouldn't matter if at the beggining it worked properly).
An official fix would be much appreciated.
Many thanks for your efforts in resolving that.
Regards

I installed the motley_anykernel_422_nexus_4_custom_build_prima_3.2.2.2.zip on top of my Paranoid Android 3+ ROM, and bluetooth still kills wifi every time you try to use bluetooth.
Also, apparently something was set in the motley kernel that turned off icmp requests, because I can no longer ping the phone, which makes it difficult to see if the ARP request timeout issue is still happening.
However, the wifi icon no longer turns grey after the screen has been blanked, and the phone is responding to push requests, so I guess that's an improvement.

My Nexus 4 arrived a few days ago. WiFi was working perfectly and without any problem at a place which used an SSID of "FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7390".
Today, I'm at a different location, where I want to connect to an SSID of "FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7240".
The Nexus just doesn't "see" this one (my old Galaxy S however does see it, as do the iPad Mini and the MacBook Pro). Even trying to manually connect the Nexus to this SSID does not work.
The weird thing is: at the same time the Nexus does "see" two other SSIDs in the neighbourhood, one of which is called "FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7170". (So it cannot be a case where it "refuses to 'see' SSID names using mixed case or special characters...)
I also tried every different setting in the WiFi setup that I could (like frequency "auto", "2.4 GHz" or "5.0 GHz" which are all supported by the WLAN router in question, and which can be used by my other clients without problem).

I have the same problem.
Before finding that this was an issue with the Nexus 4 I contacted customer services and they advised me to clear gmail cache / do a factory reset. If this is a known issue surely they should be doing a bit more than just assigning it a 'medium priority' as, for most users, reliable instantaneous email communication is a very high priority.

Not atypical for a few individual engineers in a large software company to close bug track tickets to get it off their plate. What is needed is publicity and management attention to this issue to get a higher priority. At the very least Google should provide a workaround (trade off being more battery use during sleep) at the very least, rather than wait for Qualcomm for a proper fix.
[Deleted User] <[Deleted User]> #252
I thought Qualcom had fixed the problem in their driver? I saw a git entry a few comments up.
lu...@gmail.com <lu...@gmail.com> #253
The Qualcomm fix happened in the end of February; however, the newest version of Android for the Nexus 4 was released on February 11.
I guess we have to wait at least until Android 4.3 for the new driver to be included. Seems like broken wifi is not enough to justify an unscheduled update...

I totally regret buying this phone. I don't even use it now because it's plagued with connectivity issues. Wifi can never seem to stay connected when the phone goes to sleep. Really sucks when expecting phone calls via Groove IP. Can never seem to send an email using Gmail app after the phone wakes up. Still have the issue where Bluetooth causes my wifi to disconnect. Honestly, I wanted to like this phone, but these are serious issues and Google is taking way too long to fix them.
ch...@gmail.com <ch...@gmail.com> #255
So since they're not updating Android at Google I/O, I am guessing, is this problem not getting fixed until this fall?
The phone can't get timely notifications when on wifi and it's a known issue. That's a big deal.

A few of the latest posts in this thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2072930&page=55 )would suggest yes - 4.3 does fix it, although they had to disable Wifi optimization. Not sure what battery impact this has.

Guys! I can confirm the leaked 4.3 Jelly bean does fix the problem on Nexus 4 with dropped in-coming VoIP calls and delayed notifications. But the catch is WiFi optimization has to be disabled which is a shame. Not sure about the impact on battery life so far. Will check and report back. But having WiFi optimization "on" does seem to make the ARP issue more inconsistent. At times the delay is not that long max fee seconds but sometimes when the phone is in deep sleep the drop is persistent and wont show notification until some good 10mins afterwards.
The situation is a lot better regardless of WiFi optimization turned "ON" or "OFF" But to really make the problem go away you must have it turned OFF. Android 4.3 by the looks of it has this driver fix. But if this is the real fix then am disappointed. This is a half arsed workaround at best. Qualcomm can't seriously be calling this is a "real" fix. But anything is welcome at this time. I am staying on this 4.3 with WiFi optimization turned off.

El problema definitivamente se está resolviendo en Android 4.3. Aunque es necesario apagar la opción "WiFi optimización" en la configuración avanzada para obtener los mejores resultados. Anytime with screen off now, pinging my phone with my computer will instantly drop packets again (same as 4.2.2 problem).
Once again, my settings are static ip, wifi optimization ON.
Now here is the weird part: I compared the WCNSS_QCOM_CFG.ini file from the leaked 4.3 rom and the official factory image and they are identical except for two lines:
gEnableActiveModeOffload
hostArpOffload
Both flags are set to =0 on the factory 4.3 image; while in the leaked rom they are set to =1.
Since this discovery, I have changed both settings to mimic the leaked 4.3 rom (ie. to =1 for both settings) and NOW my problem is FIXED again.
It's successfully!! Works!

wifi is set to "always on" - optimization on/off does not make any difference:

2) even if i turn on the screen - bars are gray instead of blue and remain that way - i still don't get notifications - i can access the internet though and the phone can be pinged again
the only fix to get blue bars (and sync with google servers) again is to turn wifi off and on

Android 4.3, after some time of deep sleep the device is no longer pingable.

Now I'm trying a custom kernel with latest WiFi driver, but first results are not encouraging.
Please Google, this is REALLY a pain. No ARP = No push notifications.

This is basically Wifi Sleep current issue , which basically from Firmware of Wifi chip is doing. It reflects on other interfaces also, It has been there in all the devices, not only in mobiles but also in all the electronics devices which has Wifi as a part interface.

It's not fixed by KitKat. Is it happening in Nexus 5 too? It's extremely annoying to have to keep the screen on everytime I'm downloading something because if not, the download will cut.

Ok, this is quite frankly pathetic. Why isn't this issue sorted out yet? Me and others I know with a Nexus 4 suffer from this particular problem and was hoping Kitkat 4.4 was going to be rectifying this...
Unfortunately we still suffer with completely delayed notifications and anything else wifi related either having delays or cut off completely.
This isn't on. Completely regret moving from a iPhone to a Nexus 4 which never suffered from this issue at all.

I'm pretty sure I have this issue on a Nexus 5 running stock 4.4. After the screen has been off for a while, notifications are often delayed. For example, I might get an email to say someone has posted on my Facebook timeline, but I get no notification on my phone. Then a few minutes later, I'll get a bunch of notifications all at the same time on the phone.
Does that sound like it's caused by this issue? I'm not very happy about it as it's spoiling my experience with an otherwise very good phone.

mr...@gmail.com <mr...@gmail.com> #353
Yes, sounds as though you have this same issue. It's awfully disappointing that it's happening on the Nexus 5 too! I was going to shift my Nexus 4 (on 4.4 too) to purchase a Nexus 5 as this problem is most likely never going to be fixed - you've saved me another headache so thank you!
The delayed notifications improve for me if I turn off "WiFi Optimization" in the advanced WiFi settings, (they can still be slightly delayed but it eradicates this issue pretty much), however battery consumption then becomes ridiculous and thus not really a solution.
If my screen has been off for a nice ample amount of time (say 15 minutes or so), then I'll pretty much never receive any notifications until the screen is put back on/unlocked. The delay as I say is pathetic, and not something I have ever experienced on any phone before.
I believe the only solution at this point is to purchase a completely different phone sadly.

After further testing, I don't think my Nexus 5 issue is related to this. I can ping the phone when it's been asleep for a while and it always responds, so there must be something else causing it.
mr...@gmail.com <mr...@gmail.com> #355
I'm able to do that as well.
My Nexus 4 responds to pings ok, but when it comes to Hangouts messages, they'll always be delayed. Video calls appears to go through from hangouts the majority of the time however.
It's certainly a mixed bunch. Definitely some issue somewhere. I feel my phone has improved since moving from factory 4.3 to 4.4 as before I couldn't even ping my phone at all, perhaps due to the now turned on "ARP Offloading" that a lot of people mention.

I had this type of problem with my nexus 4 (Android 4.3), too. When running an UPnP controller app the music did stop playing on my hifi after some minutes after the nexus 4 screen turned off. The BubbleUPnP app was not able to send any further commands as the nexus seemed to be offline.
Yesterday I got the Android 4.4 OTA update. So I retried the UPnP playback and was able to listen to a whole 77 tracks album that runs approx. 70 minutes. I just turned on the nexus screen once in the middle of the album for some seconds. So it feels much better now. But I will keep an eye on this the next days.

Been running 4.4 after the OTA update for a couple of days. It seems like this has been fixed. If this was the issue that caused your delayed notifications (apparently with some routers this wasn't an issue), then you'll notice an improvement.
There are also other possible issues like the low "heartbeat" frequency issue, but that can be fixed with third-party apps like PNF. If you had the issue described in this thread, then not even PNF worked, like in my case.
As further proof that this issue was fixed, I am now able to ping the device at any time. The first ping request (the one that now "wakes" the device, but previously didn't) will take a considerable amount of time (usually 1500ms to 2000ms) or just time out, but subsequent requests will be succesful.

I'VE FOUND A WORKAROUND of this no-push-notif during deep sleep problem.
Earlier, I tried holding partial wakelock so the device never sleep, this of course works alright, but drains battery very rapidly (5% / 30mins).
This is NOT ACCEPTABLE.
So, I tried something else :
automatically waking up the device regularly every 30mins, with the help of Tasker (which doesn't turn on the screen at all).
The result is :
7 hours after screen off and a good night sleep, in the morning I sent myself a BBMsg and it arrived perfectly in about 5 secs.
Battery consumption is totally acceptable : only 4% drop during 7 hours (dual sim ON, data ON).
That's days ago, and still works perfectly until now, I'm happy with it, so I'd like to share the AWESOMENESS.
I'm not sure about push notif from Google servers via GCM, I don't use any app which takes advantage of GCM, I only use BBM which uses its own servers.
In this case, you should first try adjusting heartbeat interval using PushNotificationFixer (which can't help me since it only resends heartbeat to Google server).
Tasker setup :
1. create new profile : Time
* uncheck both start & end time (so it starts and ends from midnight to midnight)
* check Repeat : every 6 minutes (during deep sleep, this 6 mins expands 5x to 30 mins)
2. add new task :
what you do in this task doesn't really matter, the point is to do something in a regular interval (I only use Alert Morse, so I know that the profile is still running)
GODSPEED !!!!
PS. :
if you're not familiar with Tasker, after installation you have to :
1. allow it as admin (system Settings > Device Administrators)
2. turn on its service (system Settings > Accessibility)
3. put it on auto-start list

Description
With Wifi ON (and sleep wifi set to NEVER) when the screen is off and phone idles for a few seconds the phone stops responding to ARP requests
- What happened.
When this occurs the phone stops responding to ping requests, in some instances this can also lead to delayed GMail, gTalk, Whatsapp etc notifications
PING 192.168.1.241 (192.168.1.241): 56 data bytes
ping: sendto: Host is down
ping: sendto: Host is down
Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
ping: sendto: Host is down
Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
ping: sendto: Host is down
Request timeout for icmp_seq 2
ping: sendto: Host is down
Request timeout for icmp_seq 3
ping: sendto: Host is down
Request timeout for icmp_seq 4
- What you think the correct behavior should be.
The correct behaviour is for the phone to respond to ARP requests, respond to pings therefore being contactable to receive notifications even when the screen is off
- Cause
This is caused by configuration in /system/etc/wifi/WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini which is set to filter out multicast and broadcast requests, effectively blocking ARP.
Default:
# Flags to filter Mcast and Bcast RX packets.
# Value 0: No filtering, 1: Filter all Multicast.
# 2: Filter all Broadcast. 3: Filter all Mcast and Bcast
McastBcastFilter=3
Should be:
# Flags to filter Mcast and Bcast RX packets.
# Value 0: No filtering, 1: Filter all Multicast.
# 2: Filter all Broadcast. 3: Filter all Mcast and Bcast
McastBcastFilter=0
When modifying McastBcastFilter to 0 and rebooting the phone the phone will respond to ping requests whilst the screen is off and in most cases notifications are received in a timely manner.
