the most important detail in mine (vs the one that was linked as duplicate) is that it is not unique to a device model. it is any device which is the primary (at the top of the list).

This has been happening since the introduction of Find My Device. My Pixel 8 Pro also had the placeholder icon.
I noticed when I set up my 9 Pro, and the 8 just became another device on my account, it showed the correct 8 image when it was a secondary device in the list. So it appears to just be something with the primary device slot.
