I can only support this if there is a way to fake the directory path that the app sees. That is, I need to be able to trick Chinese apps so that they can't tell the difference between me giving them a subfolder and them forcing me to give them access to all my files. Otherwise, this may threaten my physical safety when I travel.
I am the author of the other issue. I faced extreme trauma when my Chinese family compelled and coerced me to install the WeChat app. At that time WeChat closed itself on launch if it was not given the storage permission and my family kept pressuring me. Unlike the free world, China does not respect the freedom against search and seizure. Chinese companies can be forced to hand over any data to the Chinese government. Other Chinese apps mentioned in other issues are DJI and Insta360. What would happen if WeChat scanned a protest photo with my geolocation?
Back then I had Lineage AppOps and Xposed and was able to somehow restrict the storage permission. Today, those don't exist anymore. In the future I may be relying on solely how SAM keeps those apps in check. I have root so I love this feature, and do not hate it. I would rather Android remove the storage feature like earlier iOS than have a foreign government see my photos.
There is an alternative solution that both I and the power users above would accept. That would be to give me an option to trick any foreign app into thinking it was given any specified folder. Everyone else can then grant their backup and file managers access to their whole storage.

I will not buy a device unless it can be unGargoyled.
This day has been coming for a long, long time as each version of Android© has gotten more and more restrictive with more privacy invasion and less freedom for the purchaser. Notice I didn't say owner?
I bought a LG v50 and v60 and made sure by checking on XDA that they could be rooted before I purchased them.
Good luck with getting Gargoyle to do anything for you and since the US government has been bought and paid for by corporate America many years ago you'll get no help from them.

Now even Microsoft Office is trying to access all my files. I get "To browse Office files, photos, and media, you'll need to allow access to all files in Settings." This also applies to MS Teams. Discord is an example of an app that respects my privacy and keeps working when sharing photos without file access. Honestly, I believe that the Android's file restrictions are not strong enough.
I refuse to give any company access to my files. I don't give Google Drive files access, and it keeps on working. But when I don't give Microsoft or Tencent access to my files, their apps refuse to work.
Again, I will reiterate the solution that will satisfy everyone. For the non-rooted people in this thread that want to grant their open-source apps access to all their files, please let them. But for privacy-minded people like me, please do that in addition to adding a feature that allows us to lie and tell third-party apps that they have full access even without actually granting them access.

With each update like this you destroy the very core of Android, the very thing that made it so much better than other competitors - freedom! Android 14 is making a change that is related to this.
With that coming in Android 14, "To protect your privacy choose another folder" shouldn't be necessary anymore. We just need on top of that, a Google Play policy to make sure app developers can't force users to allow access to all of their photos. With that, assuming the privacy protections are still there, it would be indeed marginally more convenient if I could move obbs and other files in and out of the /sdcard/Android folder.

This bug is a regression, users are requesting a solution, and the current behavior of Android doesn't even enhance security because the storage is still accessible!
Here is a workaround for Android 12 with up-to-date apps (as of 2022-06-24) without root.
1) Install F-Droid and install Termux
2) Enable storage access in Termux.
3) The storage folder in Termux contains the paths you are looking for. Add others if you want them too such as your entire sdcard at /storage/####-####
4) Open KDE Connect -> ... -> Plugin settings -> Filesystem expose -> Add storage location -> Termux -> ☰ -> storage -> This is the path you are looking for
5) Give it an appropriate name
Now you can use KDE Connect to read+write the files on your phone with a securely paired computer, which is exactly what I wanted with my device.

on...@googlemail.com <on...@googlemail.com> #66
1. Does it allow to do it for all apps, or only for Termux?
I ask because Termux is a terminal app, which isn't so nice to use on the device.
2. It is already know that connecting the device to PC (and probably also to another Android device) you can reach the folders. What is the advantage here?
@65 That's cool. Sadly for rooted devices, which can reach these places already, but it fixes it for apps that don't use root to reach these folders.

Meanwhile on android it's like you locked your bike, submerged it in cement, and then scratch your head the next day why you can't drive your bike. I had to contact multiple devs, only to get a reply that their hands are tied up in this matter and they can't help me. Some were able to help me, but guess what, an update later and everything breaks again, only this time it can't get resolved, i am lost for words...
Yes, this improves security in one way, but it's only a matter of time until shady apps come along, promising you that they can really really access the files or do the stuff you actually want, while they pull a scam on you. In the end this is the most user-hostile android experience that i had in my entire live. This does annoy tech-savvy people and will most likely hurt people which are not. Meanwhile app developers, burn valuable time because they are now forced to deal with these uneccessary problems and angry customers, time which could have been invested into improving security, stability, features and performance of their apps.
I would suggest that you implement a option to disable this "lockdown", add a huge warning that you don't take any responsibility when the user does damage his own stuff and everyone will be happy. I'm NOT asking for root access, just don't treat us like childrens. Look at windows, it's the most used desktop PC operating system worldwide, that can be easely bricked by your grandmother, has root access by default, yet they don't lock down their system half as hard as you do. Think about this for a moment, as to why that could be...
In the end, the first and last line of defence, when it comes to security and privacy, is always yourself. You cannot replace driving licences, by locking everyone out of their cars and then claim; "See? No more accidents!"
No matter how hard you lock down a device or OS, hackers will always find a way to scam people, history is full of stories like this.
I could go on forever, why this has robbed me of any reason to stay on android, yes there was a time why i would have chosen android over ios, but AS longs as it stays this way i see no benefit in using android over ios, but for now i leave it at that.

Making your company responsible and therefore legally liable for your customers privacy in this way is a Hugh mistake!
Let your customers control there own privacy. That is the only real way to reduce your overall liability when the Class Action Law suits are filed after the next data breach.
Add a disclaimer and force your customers to agree before allowing access if you must.

I agree with the arguments above and I think that the permissions for accessing any information on the device should be consistent in the sense that, if a user can access to a particular piece of information with built-in software, they should be able to delegate that access to applications which they trust. This kind of composition is crucial for customization and building workflows by integrating software that is not specifically designed to work together, but instead designed to interoperate with generic tools. File system access is one of the most generic ways to integrate software, and allowing trusted applications to access non-private files of each other is a very important capability for a lot of users.
Protecting /sdcard/Android/data
from access by third party apps brings no additional security, as a user can anyway copy the files from that location to some less restricted place with the built-in file manager, and this is just an additional unnecessary obstacle in the way of building custom workflows and composing software to work together. There is already a secure storage in /data/data
for apps that want to hide their files from everyone else, so making /sdcard/Android/data another location of this sort, especially without real security benefits, does not seem to be the right way for it all to work.
To summarize, I would strongly support reconsidering and allowing a user to give access to /sdcard/Android/data
subdirectories to third-party applications.

Here's a solution that I feel would work for all users:
For normal users (the ones that this was made for), they can keep this and not let apps have access.
For Power Users (majority of people in this thread): Allow us to change a setting in the Developer Settings. We all most likely already have developer settings open, so why not put disabling the restriction in there?
If people want control over their device, let them have it. That was the main "appeal", the main "reason", and honestly the selling point for many people. Having a powerful device that's open. That's why I use Linux. What you're doing right now is taking that away.
Please, consider this option. Allow us to disable this restriction in Developer Settings.
TLDR: A compromise would be to allow us to remove the restriction in the Developer Settings.

You better figure out how to rectify this nonsense immediately I suspect the future of cell phone usage will pinge on this. It won't all come crashing down in the day or in two or in months but you're burning primary users left and right to the point where they're just going to find other solutions outside of the smartphone I know I have to do that now after spending years searching for a solid reliable dependable way for me to transfer my files and do artwork on the go and now the capability and the dream of that business is shattered for what reason I have no idea. This was a foolish decision I have been spending months yelling at Samsung trying to figure out how to fix all my broken apps only to find out now it was Google that screwed it all up I don't understand how a company that's supposed to not be evil can willfully collapse the functionality of their systems. Anybody who finds out why they can't do higher level things with their phones and it's basically being relegated to just a toy people don't want toys people don't want little stupid things they will be done with it like a fad if you want to be if you want cell phones if you want smartphones to be removed from the population this is how you do it you relegate these fantastic machines to just mere toys and that is what you're doing by not allowing us to move edit control the files that we create in the programs that we're using if I need to edit music I should be able to edit the music that I'm producing if I need to edit images I should be able to edit the images that I'm producing if I need to take my files and move it from my cell phone to my tablet or for my tablet to my PC or for my PC to my phone I should be able to do that I get that perhaps you're trying to do this to make your system more secure but you're throwing the baby out with the bath water this is the single it's not the single most stupid thing but this is just one of the many many stupid things that are constantly happening in this world and this s*** needs to stop sure you probably need to to secure up the file structure or something but this is ridiculous you need to be able to access the files that you're working on That's just freaking common sense and if I'm making a piece of art I should not be pinned to that one piece of art program to work on that one piece of art I should be able to have access to the files that I'm generating this is like like why even do anything why even generate anything if I can't access the files liquid that it doesn't even make any freaking sense it makes no sense this is the most absurd f****** situation I I can't even I can't even rap my head around this to be able to say this in a way that's not me cursing about it because it's just completely absurd just thoughtless mindless idiocracy like how do you expect me as a person who's using this computer tool thing to create content on it and not have access to said content how does that make any sense you tell me just fix this stuff just fix it just fix it just fix it just fix it I can't say that enough why is this even a problem why am I even wasting my time here why have I been wasting months trying to figure out ways around this garbage just fix it just make it freaking work what are you doing who are you what is any of this I spent thousands of dollars on this what is wrong with you people like are you insane are you completely out of your mind I don't even think anybody's reading these things I don't think anybody's reading any of this this is insane fix it

I'd like to add that the limitation in topic is inconsistent regarding the external volumes. When I connect a USB drive, I can select <volume>/Android/data
subdirectories in the file picker, successfully granting applications access to those directories. It makes no sense to limit access to those directories in the device's storage and allow such access in external drives, where applications may store their data in basically the same ways as with the device's own volume.
This limitation should be rendered consistent for the device memory and the attached drives – preferably by lifting the limitation for the device storage.

Also shame on Google for blocking access / censoring all the other opened issues related to this change. They're just trying to sweep it under the rug.

I hope whatever greed causes this decision will terribly backfire. Way to ruin a person's evening, jesus fucking christ. I hate android 11.
Description
OPP5.170921.005
Device:
Pixel 2 (5" screen)
Multitouch issue in games. When 2 fingers are placed on the screen in landscape mode, if the left finger is lest stationary and the right finger is slowly moved to cross the axis of the left, touch event from right finger will become erratic at times. Sometimes it also occurs randomly.
This can be duplicated playing a mobile FPS game or with a multitouch tester app. Issue was not present in the production build of Android 8.0 (OPD1.170816.010).
Appears to be a driver issue?
In the video I moved my right finger very slowly and smoothly, all erratic and rapid movement is happening on its own.
