cy...@gmail.com <cy...@gmail.com> #9
You need root to install it at the moment.
1. Download the file from the first post
2. Copy the file to /system/usr/keylayout
3. set the permisions of the file to 644
And make sure the controller's firmware is updated.

Now I just wish that someone would add support for the Gamecube WII USB Adapter. That would be amazing! Any chance you could look into it? I guess it's working on Linux... so if you're techy, you should be able to convert it over pretty easily.

With the latest controller update from MS these controllers work with stock setup. If you don't have an Xbox one, you need to download the xbox accessories app from the windows 10 store to update the firmware on the controller.
Anyone else having issue with the controllers not working after the system reboots? I find myself constantly having to repair the controllers to make them work.

A forum on NeoGAF found this issue is caused by steam. The controller would stop working after it goes to sleep the first time after computer reboot. I was able to get the controller working again by restarting steam.

Edit: Just updated the Xbox One (Bluetooth) controller's firmware today (Jan 4th 2017) and now the mapping of the buttons are all messed up again... ARGH!!
Do we need a new keylayout file or is there a way to reconfigure the file in the OP?

It seems like Microsoft changed the layout with the new update. I will look into it in the next few days.
si...@gmail.com <si...@gmail.com> #23
Thank you so much! I also noticed that the update changed my remote Device ID from 02e0 to 02ea. By renaming your file to match the new Device ID made it a lot better however I noticed it's no longer optimized. It works most of the time but periodically something will trigger one of the buttons out of the blue. For example in Order and Chaos, when you run with the left joystick for like 5 seconds, all of a sudden character menu opens, or midway through combat your inventory pops up.

it seems the key mapping is no more needed,
Microsoft fixed the mapping with a internal firmware update.
if you added the key mapping you have to remove it.
but now the new bug is

I have the same 02fd ID and I didn't got a Jan 4th update, I updated it on Dec, 31 with the firmware 3.1.1221.0. The Xbox Accesories app doesn't show a new update from the one I currently have. I didn't rooted my device (yet), in order to put the Vendor_045e_Product_02e0.kl mapping, but this would definitely not do anything since I have 02fd product and not 02e0. Also the controller connected to a Fire Tablet, without any custom mappings, has the controls mapped wrong.
I suggest we reference all data in a sheet. I started.

Andi,
Rename the custom file in the original post to match your device id and it'll work.
Or alternatively try to update your controller via someone else Xbox or PC and see if that works.
Tails,
It appears that deleting custom key layouts fix most of the issue so far. Hopefully it stays that way with future updates as well

I'm on latest pad firmware (December one, previous versions paired more or less succesfully) and on CM13, this pad now doesn't pair at all, saying "wrong PIN". Is there a possibility to edit this PIN in config files? Also I checked this on I9300 (Galaxy S3) with CM14 (Resurrection Remix, early December version) - the same error.
go...@gmail.com <go...@gmail.com> #29
Max, try this:
Find out what your remote's Device ID is (google this. Can be done on PC by going to driver's properties)
Then rename the file above to match your device ID. That should bypass the PIN bug and connect but your key mapping will be all weird. Then once you "Smart Connect and save it as trusted device" then delete the key layout file mentioned earlier. Now your device should connect to the remote without asking for PIN.
I'm not sure if this workaround works everytime or not.

Hey Max,
I'm not sure if that actually bypass the PIN or if it just trick the device into thinking it's an older firmware that didn't require PIN. I read online that some had success in using that method while others didn't. Being rooted I'm sure you can find an API editor or some type of App that bypass the PIN via entering the MAC address manually. I'll look on my days off but as of right now I'm stumped as well. Thankfully it works flawlessly on both my S6 Edge and Tab S2, but not on my son's Tab 2 :(

I am going to do a bit of a writeup.
I have a OnePlus 5 on Android 7.1.2 and I bought an Xbox One Bluetooth (black/military green monocolor with orange underneath thumbsticks, Lot No/Date 1647 (indicating built in year 2016) with Model No 1708 and WL3-00035. I was trying to play Geometry Wars 3 with the Xbox One controller out of the box and the left stick worked great, however the right stick was not functioning as expected. After a couple hours of research, I stumbled upon this thread and tested out the keyboard input files by placing them into /system/usr/keylayout with permissions 644, and the right stick started working properly and the start button which used to be the middle Xbox button was now the start button as expected. All was good. I updated the firmware of my Xbox One controller using the Xbox Accessories app with a Micro USB cable on my Windows 10 laptop and then tested out the controller again on my OnePlus 5 - the start button is now the right bumper (RB) button, but both sticks and A and B are still working fine. I would suggest not updating, unless someone can somehow update the mapping files. However, I tested the latest Xbox One controller firmware with and without the mapping files and without it, the right stick would not work again indicating that the mapping files are still working.
My OnePlus 5 has Bluetooth 5.0 but I can also try out my Nexus 6P which has Bluetooth 4.2 to see how well the Xbox One controller works both with and without the mapping files on the latest Xbox One controller firmware. I suspect it will work about the same as my OnePlus 5.
All in all, this is awesome, thank you so much, OP! <3

Sorry for double posting but it seems that the Google issue tracker does not allow editing of comments - that's a shame. After disconnecting and reconnecting my Xbox One controller again to my OnePlus 5 with the latest Xbox One controller firmware, it seems like all the buttons are working again as expected - start is the start button, RB is what it is supposed to be, X is working again, etc. It seems that updating the firmware didn't seem to affect the mapping files for me whatsoever - all is working fine for me. Just thought I would inform people of my experiences with this and the latest (presumably December, although I am unsure how to check) Xbox One controller firmware. :)

The keys are all corresponding, but LT and RT still cannot be used. Is there a solution?
ko...@gmail.com <ko...@gmail.com> #41
I'm having the same issue. Trigger buttons are not working or rather are not mapped correctly.
When I boot up Gamepad Tester and fiddle around with the controller, all the buttons are correctly mapped except for LT and RT which are mapped to the BRAKE axis (assigned to 'axis 0x17').
Additionally, only the LT button seems to alter the BRAKE axis (increases the value) and yet the RT button doesn't do anything at all (does not decrease the value even if I hold LT).
I'm using an Xbox One Wireless Controller (uses Bluetooth) on a Galaxy S7 freshly updated with Oreo.
Gamepad Tester is reporting my gamepad is using the Vendor_045e_Product_02fd.kl file for the mappings.

It should be up to the manufacturer and NEVER upto the user to customise OMS, at least on stock ROMs
Also I don't care about the adb hackery. Google is doing the right thing here
It is very much possible to see malware that could elevate to system and grant itself the permission to install overlays. Google of course knows that this code is vulnerable and they are trying to protect it by enforcing that into the system developer can make overlays

What you don't understand is that enforcing platform signature for system partition is a security feature. Otherwise, your Substratum becomes a vehicle for all kinds of apps using Substratum read/write rights to hack your phone. Substratum has root either by way of dumb developers making it "rootless" by granting root rights to the app in their roms, or via root rights given by a user. In either case, you are exposed.
Cudos to Google for catching up with Substratum and eliminating the threat.

You're wrong.
Substratum on Oreo with Andromeda **DOES NOT** require root. It needs a few scripts to be run from ADB to allow the app to manage overlays, that's it. Neither the ROM nor the user grants it root rights, it grants rights to the app to install and apply overlays.
This widespread stupidity has to stop, especially from people who know little to nothing about the topic, but spew their stupidity on public forums for fear mongering.

Substratum worked rootlessly even on stock ROMs, not just custom ROMs. And it will still have root rights. That is hardly the issue.
In case you don't know, overlays don't have any read/write rights or anything of the sort. They can just override resources like drawables and colors for apps.
Please do your research before embarrassing yourself in public.

Google I love your guys's software and have been using Android since the G1 on T-Mobile so many years ago.
I have always rooted my devices and gone crazy on them in order to make the screens dark as my eyes are very sensitive to the light.
I'm a disabled US Army veteran and like many others I've spent a lot of time in various deserts around the country or the world and have light sensitive eyes due to that. Being able to have the easy capability of installing a dark theme through substratum and Andromeda is a must for me.
I have a pixel 2 XL that I haven't unlocked or rooted because this has been available. If you take that away then I have to start busting into my phone again which nobody should have to do to do this.
Please consider this as a accessibility feature for those of us with light-sensitive eyes. At work we would call this a reasonable accommodation. If I can get the federal government to approve dark themes for use in Chrome and other places, you guys can do this for us.
Thank you.

Well ,I received a lot of notifications regarding this, so thought I would try to clarify the issue:
1. For people who say it is a security issue: Using overlays is not a security issue at all, even in oreo it worked without rootand was hidden behind an adb command. If a malware has elevated so many rights that it can execute ADB commands without an actual ADB connection, you have much larger issues than a stupid overlay being applied to your phone. Your arguments are laughable at best. The current Oreo implementation of OMS poses no security risk whatsoever.
Also, as previously suggested, google can add an additional permission (like android.permission.MANAGE_OVERLAYS) to explicitly allow applications to install overlays by giving users something like a runtime permission dialogue. This would ensure security as well as customizability.
Also, since android currently does not have native theming support or a dark mode, substratum is the best solution for people with oleds, so i dont think google will remove it.
2. Its a developer preview: You must also consider the fact that it is the first developer preview and there are 4 more to come before the final release, so you never know what features can be added or removed (google can even make overlays officially supported). This change might also be because the preview build is unstable and using overlays might have some side effects(pure speculation), so google might have a reason for it. The beta program is for getting user and developer opinion but making useless comments about requesting google and whining about google becoming apple will do no good, it will only increase the spam, so just star this issue and be patient. We should wait for the next previews before deciding anything

With all the stricter rules in place, effectively crippling software like Substratum, what's next kick cripple Tasker for doing its job? With more and more options which I love on Android gone, I might as well switch to iPhone. Android P is starting to look like iOS anyway. I know security is an issue for Android, but start at home by making the Play store a safer place.

Please.. I've had enough retardation here. If you have got something to prove give code, logs and examples. You are talking, but even you don't know what you are talking about. Either don't say such things in public, because you are fucking hiliarious. Andromeda doesn't have any read/write permissions all it can do is compile overlays and use a rootless operation to move them to the directory where they have to go. Coming here to defend Google when they fucked up, is stupid. It happens when OEM make stupid moves, but that's why there is a community to lead them to the better. if you think Substratum poses ANY security risks feel free to not use it, but lying about what is does is stupid of you. Just don't, rather go and research about OMS and Substratum.
Also they people with the stupid comments this is not the right place for those. Go and sign the petition, instead of crying here.
Also regarding the one who suggested the MANAGE_OVERLAYS permission that's a great idea, but maybe it would be a bit better if it required Device Admin instead.

The security excuse is a nice attempt, Google, but you forget that the people who ACTUALLY enjoyed using the OMS features you yourself built into 8.0 Oreo, aren't the average consumer and won't buy that excuse.
Android was supposed to be for those of us who like to customise. "Be together, not the same" remember?
Well, killing access to things like Substratum without root by thwarting OMS, and forcing users to root phones and install ROMs (thus voiding warranties and possibly bricking phones) goes precisely AGAINST that idea of "not the same".
Revert this terrible decision, and allow us to get Substratum working like before. Heck, if necessary, reach out to the Substratum theme and work WITH THEM so that you can build something that addresses those "security issues" and keeps the customisation options intact.
And consider this: we, the people raising our voices against this decision might be an insignificant number amongst the billions of Android users. HOWEVER, we are the developers and the enthusiasts that actually TELL those billions to buy Android phones instead of iPhones. We are the ones who are there for those billions to help them with their Android devices on day-to-day usage. If we stop seeing reasons to tell people to buy Android phones...we will stop. And you know what happens after that? Well, ask Internet Explorer.
You're making Android more and more like iOS.
If you continue, there'll be a point - extremely soon - where we will stop needing Android at all. If it works like iOS, we might as well just all go to iOS anyway.

Sony had a unmerged commit on the aosp Gerrit that allowed third party overlays to be used but allowed developers to whitelist what resources can be used, LG actually uses this in their nouget builds, while I don't suggest whitelisting, this security commit could be instead changed into a blacklist so developers can list what resources to not let be overlaid and allows developers to have a consistently themed app that's expected.
I see people bringing up a overlay can crash a app and that's their security concerns even though there are non malicious apps that have done this.
There is already a solution to overlays crashing apps, in custom ROMs, we had a overlay crash detector that if a overlay caused a crash, overlays on that app would be disabled.
Another feasible option would be to block specific types of resources from being overlaid, CyanogenMod theme engine actually did this and could block things like strings being overlaid
Platform key signed is a bit overboard for security and there are many different ways security could be improved on OMS while leaving it available for third party theming.
Any of the suggestions I posted above would remove any of the security concerns that have been listed here and other places.

Google, if you remove OMS and continue with the shitty UI changes you seem
to be "introducing" (read. Copying from iOS and EMUI) in Android P, I'll
have to sell my Pixel 2 and get a different phone.
With both of these changes you're throwing your existing user base, who
bought your Nexus and Pixel devices specifically because of their clean and
elegant software design, under the bus in a vain attempt to attract iShits.
And yes, this is the proper place to tell you this.

Seems like none of you actually understand what implies allowing "overlays" to 3rd parties.
They are able to change every config exposed by the android framework, they can change the brightness values of your device, tell android your device isn't sms/voice capable AND it can change some colors.
The drawbacks of this feature are higher then the "benefits" of allowing some colors/theme changes compared to what they can do to your device.
Security over personalization must win.

In theory it is possible to overlay framework XMLs, including the capabilities XMLs used by the framework to identify certain values. This CAN pose as a security threat, hence why OMS needs to limit some of the overlays - either by setting those resources overlayable only by the currently implemented system/platform signed packages, or not at all.

As I said, it's a POSSIBLE security risk. It does not necessarily apply onto AOSP, but more likely to cause issues on manufacturer modified versions.
As Substratum dev MSFJarvis has explained to me today, I quote:
"The security issues around overlays are a bit more subtle. SystemUI has a component it calls the SystemUIFactory class - pretty self explanatory. SystemUIFactory is defined in config.xml, which is under OMS's abilities to override. If you set it to null, SystemUI will never start up and rescue party won't recognise that either apparently. This is the worst I can think of right now."
Technically, OMS overlays can only override files in /res and /assets, in system apps, installed apps, and framework-res. This limits the exposed points to a handful:
- Resources, such as:
-- Layouts
-- Drawables
-- Animations and Interpolators
-- Translations
-- Values defined in resources
- Assets
Assets are in most cases HTML files or fonts. Former can have some chance of having malicious code injected (but then again, the same can be applied for websites, should Google restrict browsers on Android too?), fonts are usually not exactly known for exploits.
Resources... There the malicious injection is aimed more at the user than the actual system. Layout changing won't do much as long as there's no code behind it, so most of the changes are cosmetic - changing an icon's color, size, padding, position, etc.
OMS also requires you, if you change a style, to include all existing attributes. You can't just remove them and bam, done. What you can do with it is make a copy, and change their values.
This can result in malicious overtake too, but it's a multi-step thing. The only thing I can think of is replacing an URL in an app's resources - note, the URL **MUST** be in an XML, and not hardcoded. Then the user needs to launch said app, and go to a screen where said URL is used. This requires very specific targeting of the app and the user, AND it requires the user to install said layout. Chance of encounter - really low.
Also, sorry, I haven't done much platform development in the past ~3 years, and completely mixed up stuff. Indeed the capability XMLs are not stored in framework-res, but in a separate folder, making it impossible to change them via OMS.
The solution I see here is Google reaching out to the Substratum team (or vice versa), and them working together for OMS to be more secure, integrated, and easy to manage via Substratum or any other app that shows up to manage the layouts, if there will be any.
#135:

Also, sorry, I haven't done much platform development in the past ~3 years, and completely mixed up stuff. Indeed the capability XMLs are not stored in framework-res, but in a separate folder, making it impossible to change them via OMS.
The solution I see here is Google reaching out to the Substratum team (or vice versa), and them working together for OMS to be more secure, integrated, and easy to manage via Substratum or any other app that shows up to manage the layouts, if there will be any.

I agree entirely. And yes, this could cause security issues, but not in any
simple manner.
I think [.projekt] have been trying to collaborate with Google for a while
now. It was one of their long-term missions. Unfortunately, perfect
solutions don't always exist, as it seems Google is much more focused on
the mainstream, who are wary of Android security, than working with
developers that create anything more than surface level apps. Part of that
could have been because of the competitive atmosphere Cyanogen created
(they had their Theme Engine, too).

As much as I want to support this issue, all the spam is forcing me to remove the Star. If we want Google to keep this we need every star we can get but spamming is only going to make everyone remove their star to stop getting the pointless emails. XDA and others said exactly not to do this and you guys are idiots for not leaving, maybe you deserve to have this taken away since you clearly can't follow simple instructions to try and keep it around.

Well I apologise I might have been wrong about that config.xml, and it is indeed in SystemUI and it could break Rescue party. Even this which I'm sorry about I do indeed think that before you install something you are confident it is trusted and if it could possibly a security risk that would be trough an app you have given adb permissions to. Maybe there could be some troll "themes", but except those I can't really think of anything else, unless you give adb permissions to random apps. Again sorry

Let me break it down for you:
1. This thread is specifically to try to get Google to go back on their decision to enforce platform signature when installing overlays for OMS. This is Android P related, not has nothing to do with your particular phone, or the Smart Lock feature of it.
2. "You have my money, now make the dame iPhone work" It's a Google Pixel, not an Apple iPhone. Are you even sure what device you own?
3. If you have a problem with the updates, stop updating your phone... then you can cry about how insecure it is, and all the features you don't have. You say you've been reporting issues, but how significant are the actual issues you've been reporting? Has anybody else voiced similar issues?
4. Where are you complaining? Are you just throwing random tweets out on Twitter, or are you following the proper channels to file a complaint/suggestion for the device? [Note: I have no idea what the process is for the Pixel, but I do know it isn't to spam everybody trying to make a change regarding platform signatures]
I'm thinking a good 90% of comments on this thread have NOTHING to do with the bug, and are just people whining and crying. You need to find the proper channel to complain about your smartlock issue. And the rest of the people in here need to just start he issue and move on. If they're going to comment, they had better be posting some code or further insight into the platform signing issue, not just "Oh boo-hoo, you're ruining Android". There's a difference between Twitter and a bug tracker.

@#218, well said buddy. I just read this entire comments section & I must admit, I've never had a laugh like this reading a bug tracker issue.
"Google, stop making Android like Apple"
"Google, Android's UI is cancerous.
"Google, stop ruining Android"
"I blame obama for this" (Where did he come from?)
People have turned this from a bug tracker issue which was supposed to fix this "security bug?" by having technical conversations related to the "bug?" to a generic whining thread which no Google dev would want to read under his own free will.
To everyone here, good luck. Definitely hating & spamming a company would have your issue fixed because we all know how sensitive Google is.
Anyone here who thinks "Oh my, Android is so slow & battery drains so fast & it's UI is cancerous why can't you fix it Google" does actually have an effect as in if 1000 people say the same, Google will take notice & do something about it, you can't be further away from the truth. It doesn't have any effect here nor on Twitter or any place else. Fixing a bug requires technical details i.e. Steps to reproduce, a logcat. If you feel your phone battery drains too quickly, you might have screwed it yourself by installing some shady app or a buggy ROM, so just whining on the internet that your phone battery is draining quickly without any details isn't going to magically fix it. Not now, not in a year, even if 1 million people say the same thing.
So keep your hate comments coming, I'll check back next week to have another good laugh session. Please try to be original, no fun reading the same thing from a different person.

"I" have never made any tweets about this on twitter!! I don't know why you've decided to make ME your target and MORE importantly don't care!
My issue is more specific than what I typed. As a note Genius - some update are not an option - for those of us who don't root our phone or whatever! You pompous asses! You attack people because they don't understand or know what you do! I AM NOT ON TWIITER! if someone is posting crap then clearly I've been hacked!
Also to note - once I realize I was on a wrong thread I tried deleting my comment but could not.
so again - I AM NOT THE PERSON ON TWITTER!!!!! Got it!
You don't need to reply to ME anymore. I made a mistake in posting on this particular thread!
Your type never ceases to amaze me...wow

@226 @225 Someone should just make another issue.. and NOT share it this time. The seriousness of this should not be taken so lightly, as this change affects the community as a whole (especially those who invested much of their time and finances to build up the community in the first place). Even if this issue still remains the same one, I hope that the Android developers can look pass these "obtuse comments" and consider the negative impact that such a change has on the entire Android community; and in doing so, reverse the change for the community's sake.

This is consider as bulled at Substratums app and you told everyone to develop freedom and this word you told are lie. Guess what I try find contact with developer site and there no way to reach you. That made thing difficult to us to tell you that we want freedom of option. I believe many people tried reach you and tell you add feature as setting menu background swtich as black or white which how simple did you missed this? Did you know that many phone use OLED and waste enegry use white background for menu. Now are you sure google genius know about this? Now I hated this white background of Android Oreo with no option to swtich on black one. Please make this contact to you easier, ridiculous!

This is unacceptable, we should be able to choose if we want to use the app or not, but please don't take the option away from the people that want it. I am very disappointed to know that you decided to follow Apple's way of doing things instead of freedom. I used to love android because of customization, freedom, nowadays I might as well just get an iPhone, it seems like customization for you guys means nothing anymore.

Google, please keep Android open. I switched to Android because it was open-source and gave me endless possibilities. By setting lockdowns on the open system it will slow down the development of apps, it will give less options for users that are enforced to use bloatware by 3rd party, for me Samsung was an awefull experience, since all your apps were remade with an unoptimized app by Samsung.
n "upgrade" feels like a downgrade for every new version. I have to root my phone to downgrade it, so I can enjoy the freedom of Android. Remember, the less functionality, the less controll and going towards Apple will just stop new people from switching from what Apple is, a lock down or "ecosystem" as they call it. Linus Thorvalds gave us an option, when there were none. Others can too.

I am now doing a 180 and will be removing my star.
Please continue down the path to lock down access to Overlays and REMOVE Substratum support for Android P. It is clear Google knows what it is doing here, and since most comments here do not seem to understand the Concept of staring an issue, and moving on unless they have something technical or truely issue related to add, they don't deserve it. Obviously if overlay access was something Google wanted to expose, they would do so with appropriate controls so that any user can access it from a playstore app, without any tricks.
While Substratum works on non-root devices, there is some hackery involved to do so, and that puts it outside the typical Android user. Unless google can implement this inside of Android, without hackery, we don't deserve access to it, as it seems Substratum users can't follow simple instructions on how to star an issue an move on, and must keep complaining months on.
To be honest, I do not see any of these posters moving to Apple any time soon because they lost Substratum. You can't compare a closed Apple eco-system to Android. So what if they remove the ability to skin your phone, as pointed out, you cant on an iphone either.
So now I will withdraw my star, and I will just live with whatever theme I can access using my stock device tools.

#260 dweeb. Android as always been about freedom of customisation and always will be, if we "our own person" put our "own" devices security at risk then that's on us don't go locking everything down. What next we won't be allowed to unlock our bootloader and gain root privileges? #31 Android will always be the market leader as more percentage of phones plus a lot of other devices use android.

@263 You should've just Jailbroken your iPhone - seems like you managed the
process of rooting or getting ADB up and running, buying Andromeda and
pushing the necessary code to your Android phone aswell.
Or, maybe, is all of that just bluff and you don't understand anything of
that, don't own a compatible phone, don't actually use Substratum and
wouldn't be able to, too - when you think this all is about losing your
ability to customize.
When you think you'd lose your ability to (generally) customize in all of
this, you shouldn't be using any of the services that would be affected by
this change.
I think your phone doesn't even get 9.0 so all of this isn't a issue
anyways.
Ugh, maybe I should just remove my star, because all of you don't
understand that all of this whining doesn't change anything.

Please stop doing this, google.
LISTEN TO YOUR USERS. WE WANT A SYSTEM WIDE BLACK/DARK mode. And if you can't do this, then at the very least stop other people from implementing this as a third party feature.

Time to hurt them where it hurts, stop buying android devices until they are actually open source. I can sue an iPhone easily and perfectly if I can customize my phone.

eh...@gmail.com <eh...@gmail.com> #306
Removing substratum support will only make more people dislike Android. At this rate 'upgrading' to Android P will be a step backwards and I'm sorry but that's a very Apple like thing to do. Substratum doesn't even require users to root, it's safe and surrounds the entire concept of what makes Android special.
Without being able to apply my black themes, my device's AMOLED screen will suck my battery dry faster. I have used substratum for a long time and it's a very well made tool that I think Google should actually be looking into implementing them selves.
There's nothing wrong with customizing one's device, of course unless you are an iOS user...

What is the reason I keep getting so many emails from this source? is there something that I need to do Or what's the deal? And how do I stop getting them once I figured that out?
th...@gmail.com <th...@gmail.com> #336
The reason you are getting so many emails is because people did not follow instructions.
You have "starred" this issue. This lets the google developers know the priority of this issue.
However, if you are starred, any comments on the issue will be emailed to you.
This is why the XDA instructions (how most people got here) specifically state "STAR THE ISSUE BUT DO NOT COMMENT", since the majority of comments on this issue are un-related to the technicalities of fixing it and are more just opinions.

This is how it always goes for issues that relate to root and whatnot. If
it gets posted to XDA or Android Police, it's going to get spammed. It's
cute that you think people can read.

Please let us theme our ~$700 phones. Freedom is one major part of Android, this doesn't impose on security, and Android is about being together, not the same.

I really dislike the insipid colours in oreo I was very disappointed when I upgraded from nougat and learn my Themes won't work Pls let us be able to customise android to suit us
sc...@gmail.com <sc...@gmail.com> #350
Either add support for Substratum, or integrate it into future Android releases. If the deterioration of Android continues like this, there will be a time when people will not be able to comprehend the reason they're using it in the first place, and choose to use a superior alternative instead (The fall of an empire always leads to the rise of another empire :) )

Substratum themes are amazing, these overlays provide pure customization
without root. Google must not thwart such a beautiful initiative.

Android was all about choice and NOT been forced into some corporates theme (apple!). There are many people including myself who struggle to read black and grey on white. PLEASE keep android the platform of CHOICE and allow custoners to make their own choice!!!

your theming sucks, just let other devs help. people on android love customizing their phone. you even run campaigns and ads about making it your own. why are you not letting people theme when it is the primary thing you advertise about being better than apple now? please, don't play follow the leader with iOS.

We appreciate the feedback and would like to share some background information and clarifications.
The Overlay Manager Service (OMS) is intended for device manufacturer's use. OMS, in its current form, is not designed to be a generic theming feature -- more design considerations will need to be put into it in order to uphold Android platform's security and product standards for users. Accordingly, OMS has never been advocated as a public developer feature.
Earlier this year a security patch (CVE-2017-13263) was released to OEMs for Android Oreo devices. The patch restricts the installation of overlays to pre-installed or system-signed apps, in response to a legitimate security issue raised in Android Oreo. Android P also includes this critical security patch, so it restricts overlays in the same way as does Android Oreo.
We understand that custom theming is an important capability for some users. We will take your feedback into consideration with any future work in this area.

Okay, I've refrained from commenting here for a while, but that's just an excuse for a lazy patch.
I bet this is what happened: "Ugh, just kill the entire thing, we don't have time for this. We can work on a dark mode instead." (Yes, that's the joke.)
That last line is PR speak for "Your opinions don't matter to us" and it's quite clear that's the case.

If you truly “appreciate the feedback" you would LISTEN to the users asking for this feature.
mu...@gmail.com <mu...@gmail.com> #364
This is absolutely ridiculous. One of the draws and arguments for Android over iOS is that Android is more open. This "patch" is a lazy ass way to fix a very niche and unused "security hole". There are countless people who develop themes and live off that. As the point made previously, this helps those with disability.
Thousands of people use this every day, and you're giving them the middle finger. Please do not become Apple.

Thanks Google, this was an appropriate answer, but should have been stated at least 300 comments earlier. Security issues relating to the overlays had been mentioned much earlier, 26, 53, 78, 83, among some of the earlier ones, and I think one even referenced the above mentioned Oreo Update security patch (CVE-2017-13263), though not by name.
While the answer is the answer, and I accept that, this issue got a lot of attention, and it took 3 months to reply, allowing some anger to really build up in this thread. Next time, you may want to make this information available earlier, to help explain your decision, or validate those who stated the correct reason. Given that information, perhaps we could have been contributing to future work in this area.
If it wasn't for all the statements pleading to keep this support, or threatening to switch to iPhone, some of the discussion on security issues relating to Overlays and potential solutions would be easier to find and participate in. Unfortunately, these great comments are now all buried in over 300+ "Spammy" posts. Shame people can't read directions, and star issues, and leave commenting to technical discussion.
Perhaps someone can go back through, pull out the relevant posts, and start a new topic to discuss, and not let XDA know, so it isn't hijacted by complainers.

That's some sleezy pr speak right there to say nope, this is for oem use only under the guise of security.
Sony literally has open commits on the aosp gerrit on how to improve the security of the oms system without blocking out 3rd party that has been there for over a year and LG had it in production software.
Granted that is a whitelist system and a blacklist system would be more desirable to not allow "dangerous resources" to be overlaid that also allows 3rd party app developers to say which resources should not be themed.
Cmte had proof of concept on over a million devices that a specific resource type could be blocked out from being overlaid if they are the security concern.
Google decided to just lock all overlays behind a platform sig and that's not just being lazy, it was purposely for blocking out third party theme systems and enforce the oem system and themes on the user.
There was a million different ways that Google could have approached this to improve the security even from Sony who designed the system and instead they chose to block out any third party theming under the guise of security when the intent is clear that this is only benefical for their oem partners and does not improve security at all

You're a bunch of cunts, that's what you are. Not only you'll never provide any significant theming engine, you're trying to make us believe this move is for "security". It isn't. You're just a bunch of pansies whose job is to copy iOS.
Shame on you all.

There is no reason for anyone to continue posting here. Google has confirmed that this change WAS intentional and THERE IS NO GOING BACK! After reading through this thread, I can't blame them. The only people that had legitimate claims in the first place were those who required high contrast due to visual imparements. Google will not change there minds at this point. XDA I suggest removing the link to this thread on your post.

Sure, keep telling Google that this was a bad idea. They need to know that we want themes but don't spam HERE. I'm sure everyone who has starred this issue agrees with you but i'm sick and tired of my inbox blowing up from this stupid argument. Contact Google directly instead of making all of our inboxes full.

Android O introduced OMS, so we can install theme without root privilege. But in Android P, the restriction is a huge drawback. Please do not block custom overlay theme engine like Substratum from being working properly.
